hi all......

Asking this question on behalf of a friend, im not sure myself, so hope somebody here will know......

my friend, who is living in thailand has a 1 year non immigrant `o` visa...... it expires in July,

he was recently married in thailand..... so when his visa expires, can he just apply for a new visa in thailand on the basis that he is now married...?

or does he have to apply for a 1 year extension for the visa he currently has??

or would it be easier all round if he came back to the uk and get it here????

any help appreciated

Believe your friend has a non-immigrant multiple O-visa which entitles him to stay after each entry for a maximum of 90 days. After the 90 days he has to leave the country and return for another 90 days-stamp. This can be done until the visa expires.

The best way, apply for extention of stay by 1 year with the local immigration. Proper form (TM 7)

bank statement/letter showing Baht 400,000 in the acount, wife's ID-card, marriage certificate etc.

Based on this extention can be granted up to 1 year from last entry.

After having done this for three consecutive years he will be able to apply for permanent residence.

A VISA, btw can never be obtained inside the country but only from Thai missions abroad.

Giulio, have a look here, although I believe, the fees have increased:

Basically, you must have stayed for a minimum of 3 years after having arrived on a non-imm visa (B or O), on yearly extensions without having left the country to arrive on a new visa. Of course it is ok to leave under re-entry permits.

So it is not a visa, but a permit to stay permanently and it is a pre-condition to apply in future for Thai citizenship.
