THAI cuts festive week airfares by up to 35%

BANGKOK: -- Thai Airways International is offering domestic fare discounts of up to 35% as well as adding 10% more seats during the Songkran holiday season.

The ticket discounts are being offered from April 10-17 on 10 routes, which are Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, Surat Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, Chiang Rai, Krabi, Phitsanulok and Udon Thani.

A one-way ticket from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, the most popular destination for Songkran, will cost 1,600 baht, down from the normal fare of 2,370 baht. The price excludes tax and surcharges.

A Bangkok-Hat Yai flight, which normally costs 3,190 baht, will cost 2,100 baht, according to Vasing Kittikul, THAI's executive vice-president for commercial affairs.

However, the discounted tickets are good for travel from Bangkok to the domestic destinations on April 15, 16 and 17, while discounted tickets for travel to Bangkok from the provinces must be used between April 10 and 14.

From April 12 to 17, the national carrier will provide about 8,000 additional seats by increasing frequencies as well as operating larger aircraft, bringing total seats available over the period to 100,656.

International passengers flying to Thailand with THAI will enjoy Thai music as well as a documentary video on Songkran, while first-class passengers will be greeted with a water blessing as an introduction to the festival.
