Chiang Mai tourist couple killed by lightning in Arizona USA

Featured Replies

Reuters) - A married couple killed by a lightning bolt near the Grand Canyon this week was identified on Friday as tourists visiting from Thailand.

Aram Kawewong and wife Ratchaya Tantranon, both 20, were among a group of people struck by lightning on Tuesday at the LeFevre Overlook, about 30 miles north of the Grand Canyon National Park, the Coconino County Sheriff's Office said.

The two tourists, from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities had been withheld pending notification kin, the sheriff's office said.

The lightning bolt also struck and injured a boy who was traveling with another group of adults.

Both were from the city of Chiang-Mai in northern Thailand. A relative says Kawewong's age was 30.

Authorities say a lightning bolt struck Tuesday afternoon in the area of the LeFevre Scenic Outlook on state Route 89A in Fredonia.

Sheriff's officials released a photo of the scene that showed a broken rock on the wall of the overlook.

They said it's believed the couple was standing on the rock seat beneath the wall when the lightning struck and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Tragic tragic deaths, I'm so sorry to hear of that.

That's sad.

To fly so far, to meet your deadly fate, sorry! sad.png

Terrible news.

Did I see that he was a Prof. at CMU?? Perhaps Twais could fill in some if he was.....

Sad , sad, news.....condolences to those will no doubt miss their loved ones.

He was teaching computer engineering at CMU.

Apparently only married about 10 days ago. So sad.

RIP

I believe it being said on facebook that one was a Doctor and the other a Dentist? On their honeymoon in the USA. Very sad indeed (and incredibly rare). I forget what the odds are of being struck by lightening, but very high up there - perhaps one in a million or something like that?

RIP. Very sad indeed.

University instructor at 20 years old? You normally do not even graduate with a Bachelor Degree until 21 or 22 years old. Something doesn't compute.

I would guess the original article should have probably said "couple in their 20's."

Photos of the wedding. Lovely couple and so young, very sad indeed.

Very sad. Quite a freak accident. Might expect one dead, but both of them. Sad.

I suppose if there is any consolation it's that they went together. Imagine losing your spouse on the honeymoon.

The SW US is quite dangerous with regards to lightening. I know that area quite well and use to camp not far from there. Summertime is when the storms roll through.

Very sad for such a young couple. RIP.
