BANGKOK, July 29 – Thailand’s political temperature over the controversial Amnesty Bill has heated up, but Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra refuses to take a stand on the issue and has left the question of whether it will be debated in Parliament or not to the government whip and Parliament itself to decide.

The premier assigned National Police chief Adul Saengsingkaew to ensure non-violence and public order during the people’s demonstrations against parliamentary deliberation of the bill.

She called on all parties concerned to jointly find a solution to their differences through discussion in the legislative forum.

Promprong Nopparit, spokesman of the ruling Pheu Thai Party which has sponsored the widely-criticised legislation, charged opposition Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva with distorting facts and creating confusion among the public in his call for a protest against the bill.

He said the amnesty move was aimed at giving freedom to “political victims” of all factions and 'colours' while core leaders involved in political rallies and ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will not be covered by the bill.

Political activists protesting against the bill have announced they will hold a mass rally in Bangkok on Sunday (August 4) and said people from many provinces will travel to the capital to join the demonstration.

The government bloc has slated August 7 for a parliamentary deliberation of the bill.

Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan has instructed provincial governors nationwide to explain to the public the scope of their rights to demonstrate.

Democrat leader Abhisit said the government should discuss the issue with all parties concerned before presenting the Amnesty Bill for debate in the Lower House.

Democrat MP Ong-ard Klampaiboon said his party strongly objected to the Amnesty Bill which will lead to political confrontation and called on the prime minister to show her leadership in coping with confrontation. (MCOT online news)

"She called on all parties concerned to jointly find a solution to their differences through discussion in the legislative forum."

Where she rarely ventures and the PTP led coalition government has the majority to bulldoze through the amnesty bill against any opposition.

Can I hear the throb of V12 engines and a squeak of rolling track? Well, can't say they didn't have a fair chance to put Thailand first. With Yingluck having bolted off to the dark heart of Africa for a butchers at some blood diamonds it would be history almost repeating itself.

So the leader of the party pushing through the most controversial proposal in the nation's history, one which rides roughshod over the courts, doesn't actually support it but prefers to sit on the fence shoegazing?

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra refuses to take a stand on the issue

Sums up her term as PM nicely, no stand on this issue or any other. She still doesn't know if it was her brother on the tape, yeah right.

What a great time for a shopping trip to Africa

Guess some people are just totally useless so they feel if they go missing it is of no great loss

"She called on all parties concerned to jointly find a solution to their differences through discussion in the legislative forum."

Pretty darn sure no amnesty bill is going to bring reconciliation ....

Just my opinion

Useless is as useless does, just amazes me how blind the Thais appear to be!

Vietnam has already surpassed Thailand, and Cambodia is knocking at their back door!!

The only people who should be given amnesty are those who have been imprisoned under the article 112. Those responsible for violence whether it was politically motivated or not still committed those acts of violence and should rot in prison for it, I dont care if they are red or yellow or any other damn colour, violence is violence and SHOULD be punished....
