Opposition strongly opposes govt-backed Amnesty Bill

BANGKOK, July 31 – The opposition whip announced its rejection of the controversial Amnesty Bill, tentatively scheduled for debate in the Lower House on August 7.

If it is passed, said Jurin Laksanawisit, chief opposition whip, the bill will destroy Thailand’s rule of law as it aims at whitewashing persons charged with terrorism and burning state and private property.

“Other legislation may be piggy-backed with the Amnesty Bill for parliamentary deliberation. The Amnesty Bill is not meant to lead to reconciliation as claimed by the government," he said. "On the other hand, it will create disunity and crisis in the country.”

Deputy Parliament speaker Charoen Chankomol said the highest level of security will be enforced at Parliament when it reconvenes on Thursday while strict inspection of visitors, MPs and vehicles into the compound began yesterday.

Roads around Parliament will not be sealed off, but demonstrators will be instructed to rally peacefully, he said.

Some MPs want the debate of the Amnesty Bill to be moved forward but he insisted that it would be slated for August 7, and not earlier.

He said the bill would benefit all political stakeholders, rather than creating conflicts in society as claimed by some groups.

It's true that it will benefit those on all sides but some of them don't want that.

The very simplest way to demonstrate how faulty a non-partisan amnesty is towards reconciliation is to occupy Ratchaprasong demanding that the puppet prime minister step down and refuse to leave until you've managed to contrive a violent situation. Then, afterwards you will be able to expect an amnesty. Any further questions?
