The Royal Thai Navy welcomed Their Majesties the King and Queen to Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan province with a 21-gun salute yesterday.

HUA HIN: -- The salute, each round five seconds apart, was fired from HTMS Pin Klao just about a kilometre off the coast, the ship's captain Commander Prasobchai Yoosamran said, adding that this was the biggest honour for him and a proud moment for his crew.

Their Majesties reportedly watched the gun salute from inside Klai Kangwon Palace, where they arrived yesterday for an extended break.

After the salute was completed, the vessel returned to its docking station near the Piam Suk pavilion inside the palace compound to continue with its duties as guard of honour. HTMS Pin Klao, which is officially the royal gun-salute ship, performed 10 drills before yesterday's official ceremony, Prasobchai said.

Police said the eight members of the patrol unit on four motorcycles were riding along the road in Praiwan subdistrict of Tak Bai.

They were ambushed by an explosion that was hidden by a roadside tree. The bomb was triggered by radio signal.

Four soldiers were wounded and sent to Narathiwat Rajanakarin Hospital for treatment.

In related development, two more army ranger volunteer who were wounded in two separate attacks in Narathiwat on Friday were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Chaisiri Detphon was wounded in a bomb ambush in Tanyong Mat subdistrict in Ra-ngae district while Jira Chanmeechote was wounded in a gun attack in Chuap subdistrict of Cho-airong district.

Narathiwat governor Apinan Suetanuwong has ordered security officials in 13 districts to join forces to monitor the situation to prevent any possible attacks, particularly in commercial areas, financial institutions and schools.
