Anti-govt movement may suspend protest

BANGKOK, Aug 10 - The anti-government People’s Army against the Thaksin Regime (PATR) said the group may suspend its rally against the parliamentary deliberation of controversial amnesty bill if the public disagrees with its demonstration.

PATR leader retired Admiral Chai Suwannaphap said the group still adheres to its aim to oust the Thaksin regime and will continue its protest in order to follow up its six-point proposal earlier submitted to the government.

Adm Chai however noted that the PATR has gathered supporters within a short period of time, but that more time is needed to strengthen the group's common grounds.

He said the group will assess the overall situation, including public support of the demonstrations and expanding its allies. The protest may have to be suspended, but the moves to topple the Thaksin regime will continue.

With the low turnout of protesters, Adm Chai reasoned that many might have been threatened, while some might hesitate to join as they were uncertain of the group's intentions.

The PATR stance came as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra revoked enforcement of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in three Bangkok districts today, one day ahead of the original final day of enforcement tomorrow.

The group leaders said lifting the ISA has no impact on the movement as it has not led its supporters into the areas under the special law enforcement.

Parliament on Thursday approved the first reading of the controversial amnesty bill with an overwhelming 300-124 vote in a house dominated by the ruling Pheu Thai party, paving the way to grant amnesty for those involved in Thailand's political violence from 2006 to 2011.

The PATR leader commented that the approval was not unexpected and that as ousted-premier Thaksin will benefit from the bill, the Opposition is duty-bound to fight against the attempt in the parliamentary system. (MCOT online news)

Not surprising that for the length of time this thread has been started that the usual Anti Thaksin suspects have steered clear. Whatever spin the Admiral puts on this , in truth it has been yet another pathetic abject failure. Similar to Pitak Siam The white Masks etc. People were free to attend and two men and a dog turned up.

People are voting with there feet and the vast majority of Thais dont want a return to an Amaat instructed military government running the country and emptying the coffers. A reality check is required for those that cannot see the writing is on the wall. Thaksin is their leader and offers far more opportunity for a better life than those who claim they know whats best for them. Your silence on this thread is an acceptance of the future and maybe an acceptance that most Thais dont think remotely like you.

How do you know how most Thais think? Have you actually got off your keyboard and done any research?

The current government are bought and led by a convicted criminal who chooses to run from the courts, either to appeal his conviction, or face and defend the outstanding more serious charges. Why do you think he doesn't just come back and fight through the courts ....................... ??

The majority of Thais did not vote for PTP and Thaksin as a convicted criminal fugitive was not allowed to stand.

Read all the threads on TV and other sources and see how well this government has performed over 2 years, the amount of billions of baht missing, the open lies, the flaunting of laws and refusals to answer Ombudsman's questions. Name one thing that this government has achieved that will provide a better life for anybody other than themselves, clan, cronies and toadies.

Do you really think extremely large off budget loans, that will bypass parliamentary checks and balances will be used for the good of the country? Will open fair and transparent bidding be used ? Are you really that naiieve ?

Thaksin stealing the country's funds to provide a cheap loan to Myammar so they could by things from his personal companies sums the economic strategy up nicely. Find lots of ingenious ways to enrich ourselves, tell the populace any old crap, supress free speech and claim we support democracy.

Amaat led military juntas may be intolerable, but sadly, the current government don't seem any better, and according to many, a lot worse.

Thais (on both sides) have had enough of these protests and aside from their leaders very few can be bothered with them any more. That's been the case since the Burmese border red shirts no show a couple of years ago.

Thank god for small mercies.

Ever threw a party and no one showed up? All those canapés going into the garbage bin....

Yeah... That would have upset me too :)

Seems like many also threw their cute little (white) mask in the same garbage bin (including on this forum).

During years these protests were more like pic nic parties. Some covered pic nic parties, like the one at Suvarnabhumi :)

Now that it's no fun anymore most stay home.

Good. Very good. Let the government work. Enough time lost !

"................Thais dont want a return to an Amaat instructed military government running the country and emptying the coffers."

Sadly, by the time there is any change on the political horizon, there will be no coffers to empty. That is already well under way without the assistance of the meddling military.
