Hello, I'm 22 years old, a Malaysian living in Kuala Lumpur.

I'm actually planning on a trip to Chiang Mai, for the purpose of visiting my Thai friends there. My stay would be about 25-30 days. So I'm thinking of buying an Air Asia one way ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Chiang Mai, and for returning, transportation mean would be by bus.

Now, the question is, do I need to apply any visa for this? Or can I just simply book for the one way ticket and travel to Thailand without any problem at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport)?

To travel on a one way ticket you should have a visa to be safe as the airline will see this

Visa not required for a touristic stay up to 30 days, if

holding confirmed return/onward ticket.

And it is up to them what they do about it. They could deny boarding.

You could call airline and check - they may well not enforce this for those from Malaysia but it is on the data base as being a requirement.

The airline might refuse you. A visa is not required for a touristic stay up to 30 days for Malaysians, if holding confirmed return/onward ticket.

So either get a tourist visa or be prepared to buy a ticket back to KL.

Hi, thanks for the prompt replies.

Some questions, how long does it take for the Thailand Embassy to process my visa application? And as I can see from this forum, most Malaysians would apply for their visa in Penang? Can I do it in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur? There's a Thailand Embassy there if I remember correctly.

Apply at Jalan Ampang, drop off 9.30AM (arrive early), pick up next morning 11.00 AM, easy :o

Normal turn around is apply in morning and pick up afternoon next day at most Consulates. Yes you can use the Consulate section of the Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to obtain your visa.

Edited: By the way guys, do I need to show them that I have 20,000 Baht with me? Or I can simply do away without it?

Alright guys, thank you so much for your help. Will update you guys again on Monday to see how everything goes at the Thai Embassy.

To the Op,

As a Malaysian passport holder you don't require any special Visa to visit Thailand for a duration of 30 days as you will given out visiting stamps of 30 days on your passport as you enter the kingdom.

If you are taking the Airasia to Chiangmai, you will be going through LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) and watchout for major delays as I had experience coming back to Bangkok with 6 hours delay.

And for the return ticket, the rules "said" you have to have one but I have traveled in and out of Thailand for years without having one and never had been questioned by any imigrations nor any airlines for it.
