PHUKET: -- Two Frenchmen and a Swiss national were arrested on Saturday morning (August 24) for staying in Thailand after their permits to stay had expired.

Immigration police received a tip-off that three tourists, living together in Chalong, seemed to be overstaying. The tip off did not, however, say where they were living.

A second tip-off came on Saturday, saying that the trio had been seen in the vicinity of the PTT Petrol Station on Chaofa West Rd.

Pol Capt Angkarn Yasanop and the team hurried over to the patrol station and spotted the three, asked for their passports, and confirmed they had overstayed their permits.

The three are Damien Yann Minnig, 31, from Switzerland, whose permit expired in January 1, 2011; Frank Georges Vincent Fechant, 50, from France, whose permit expired on February 17 this year; and Soulimant Loic Yves Barthelemy, 23, also French, whose permit was valid only until February 22, 2013.

All three admitted to overstaying and were sent to Chalong Police Station to be charged.

They are expected to be fined and then deported.

Someone had it in for them........the first tip off notifying the police of their existence, the second one possibly / probably from the same person telling police exactly where they were.

My first suspicion would be a spurned girlfriend but chances are one of those would know where they were staying, so that leads to someone else that had a dislike for one or all of them. Someone down the pub maybe? Who knows......

That's my best Sherlock attempt, over to you ......

Anyway.......it just goes to show that if you are vulnerable in Thailand, someone will eventually do you in. There's always a snake in the grass waiting it's chance........and if you are vulnerable, whatever you do, don't tell someone your weakness. It will always come back to haunt you.

I'd be interested to know how the young Swiss guy funded such a long stay here. I have my suspicions. It's possible his arrest for overstaying may have saved him from more serious charges in the future.

It amazes me how many younger people from many country's manage to fund their long term stay here.

Also my first thought...! Are there not more newsworthy incidents in Phuket...?!

And it comes under a "Must Read" header......?!

As in so many of these stories it is hard to differentiate between villain and officer. What a scruffy bunch. In a country with such a militarized ethos I fail to understand why these Immegration officials are almost always in jeans and tee shirts. Every Condo, shopping mall and even local schools have formal quasi military uniforms , even the politicians like to dress up in their military whites and emulate some mythical hero, yet this bunch of hapless hero's look like factory workers on lunch break.

The police wear a uniform, the Army wears a uniform even Immegration office officials wear uniforms . Perhaps it's an undercover Serpico sort of a thing.

Well, having two roommates would help costs quite a bit. Cooking at home, and buying food/drink in bulk also helps to keep costs down. Daily entertainment probably consists of relaxing on the beach, which is free of charge.

Well, if he was living so affordably, why couldn't he afford visa runs? :) :)

Because that would cost more money and eat into his savings. Or to say it another way, he wouldn't be able to afford the monthly flights out of the country.

Fantastic job by the Police - shows how efficient they can be in solving these huge and important cases. I for one feel safer knowing these master criminals are behing bars. I hope this makes the International news so these officers can be recognised as fine detectives and should be proud to solve this case worthy of Interpol.

ROTFLMAO - That is a great joke...

Now I ponder the fellow who stayed behind after the Vietnam war, without Passport or visa, learned to speak Thai and bummed around the NorthEast for 30 years, before he died...??? He was well know to authorities, having articles written in English and Thai dailies.

They were arrested by the Immigration Police. Would you rather they didn't do their job?

So, eventually, he gets to the point where he has no money, for anything, and what does he do......................................?
