DUBLIN, IRELAND (BNO NEWS) -- A homeless man from Poland is thought to have been crushed to death in the Irish capital of Dublin when the waste container he was sleeping in was picked up by a garbage truck, police said on Monday, appealing for public help to trace the man's last movements.

The body was discovered just before 9 a.m. local time on Friday when employees were unloading a garbage truck at the Panda waste recycling facility in Dublin. The victim has since been identified as 43-year-old Haryk Piotrowski, a homeless immigrant who originally came from Poland.

"The truck in which the body was found had collected recycling bins from the center of Dublin City. It had collected 55 bins, 30 of which were the larger 1,100 Lt bins," said Sergeant Jim Molloy of An Garda Síochána, Ireland's police force, referring to industrial-sized waste containers.

Molloy said investigators believe Piotrowski was in the capital's Dame Street area between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. local time on Thursday, but possible sightings of the Polish man were also reported in the Wood Quay and Merchant's Quay areas of Dublin in the early hours of Friday morning.

"[Police] are seeking the public's help in identifying the last movements of the deceased. [An Garda Síochána] have made contact with the man's family in Poland," Molloy said, urging anyone with information about Piotrowski's last movements and his death to contact investigators.

Ireland has been a popular destination for Polish immigrants since Poland joined the European Union (EU) in May 2004, with more than 120,000 Polish people living as residents in Ireland at the time of the last census in 2011. But the Irish recession has hit hard for some, leaving them homeless, without work and without food.
