Popular Post theblether
My pal is in this Temple just now. I went searching around the net for some info on it and this youtube video popped up. There's sound but no commentary. Fascinating to watch though. This is the last Burmese Tempe in Chiang Mai...... The death of the Abbot threatened the status of the Temple and that led to protests as the Thai monkhood moved to take control of the Wat and assets........ http://www.irrawaddy.org/archives/8897 After some high level negotiation a compromise was reached....... http://www.irrawaddy.org/archives/42429 Just a little bon mot of the life that goes on around us here in Chiang Mai, interesting stuff.

hellodolly
Well I see that they appointed a Burmese Abbot. "CHIANG MAI, Thailand — More than a year after an outcry over a Thai attempt to take over the last Burmese monastery in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, Burmese Buddhists on Tuesday managed to officially install one of their countrymen as abbot." I was a little concerned as the one article said it was law that it be run by a Thai abbot. That's all we need mix religion and laws just like having Sharia law.

Look up the Department of Religious Affairs under the Ministry of Culture for the Thai government. Part of the reason foreigners enjoy as much relative freedom as they do in Thailand is because of Buddhist tolerance.
