Red Bull heir Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya pleads illness, evades prosecutor

They won't issue an international arrests warrant, this will play out as usual. The rich are immune from this sort of thing. Look at MooHam, the other little tart that killed 7, none of then have done any jail time, don't expect anything different here. When it's rotten from the top, don't expect anything to change.

Police to issue arrest warrant for Red Bull heir Vorayuth Yoovidhaya

By Peter Shadbolt, CNN

(CNN) -- Thai prosecutors were poised to issue an arrest warrant Tuesday for the grandson of the creator of the Red Bull energy drink who failed to appear in court this week over a fatal hit-and-run case that sparked nationwide anger.

Prosecutors allege Vorayuth Yoovidhaya, 28, was behind the wheel of his Ferrari on September 3, 2012, when it collided with an on-duty policeman on a motorbike in downtown Bangkok.

He is charged with reckless driving causing death, speeding and failing to stop following an accident.

Thai police told CNN that Yoovidhaya's lawyer had informed prosecutors his client was in Singapore receiving medical treatment for a bout of influenza he contracted while on a business trip and would not be in Thailand for his scheduled court hearing.

Thai prosecutor Ruecha Krairiksh said his no-show meant that the speeding charges would lapse but the more serious charges of reckless driving and failing to stop would still apply.

OMG! Look at the damage the policeman's body did to the windshield! He probably got blood on the car too! Do you have any idea what this cost to repair?

Why the outrage over the killing of this policeman? Is it worse killing a policeman by driving over him than it is to shoot him in the face when he is being held by your two brothers in a crowded bar?

The latter event gets you handsomely rewarded with riches and a lucrative political career. Will the Red Bull chap get a political reward? I can't stand double standards.

Is anyone even remotely surprised by this whole turn of events? Although a few people may shake their heads, there is no large scale outrage. Why? Because the system is working exactly as it is designed and intended to work. Money buys you immunity from the law and the right to do whatever you want; everyone knows this. Hell, it's not even corruption as the word 'corruption' describes a deviation from some accepted set of legal/moral/ethical standards. What we are currently seeing...are...the standards and this whole obscene lakorn, considering the context, is perfectly normal. How incredibly twisted.

I seem to remember an advert on BBC television promoting Thailand as a great place to invest and where we have "Rule of Law".

This Red Bull case is just one of many examples of where there is NO Rule of Law especially if you're monied and are connected to people in the know.

We'll never know the extent of damage this will have on the reputation of Thailand but many people who were thinking of investing / living here might be thinking otherwise after following this story.

The BBC does not broadcast adverts on television.

How about "dropping" all the charges and stop the whole charade?

Thailand is making itself ridiculous in face of the whole world by keeping this charade going on.

The Red Bull heir will NEVER see a prison from the inside.

Nuff said

I don't think the whole world are watching........I doubt this gets a mention outside Thailand unless someone abroad is making an article on wayward S.E Asian heirs, unlikely.

He will certainly pay for it, but in the Thai way. Quite a few Thais are calling for a prison sentence, but truths if the victim was their family they would rather the money than he serve the prison time. And if it was their son who caused the accident they would rather pay for his "mistake" in cash than he do the time.

So a little moral outrage in Thai Rath, but business as usual even though the whole country is watching.

It was front page of The Guardian - a respected UK newspaper 6 hours ago. So yes the eyes of parts of the world are on the Thai idea of justice. Is it Thainess to flee: the scene of an accident or your country when caught with your hand in the honey-pot?

The Guardian - a respected newspaper cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

But, fair play to them for running this front page. Let's hope they and others follow the farce and comment on how he gets away with killing a policeman whilst driving recklessly, speeding, under the influence of alcohol and a prohibited substance, leaving the scene, failing to assist and trying to pervert the course of justice.

What happened to the servant and police officer who were involved in the attempt to pervert justice?

All will disappear before our eyes and blow over. Think skinned HiSo won't give a shit what anyone thinks. Just annoyed at temporary inconveniences.

So what happens in most western countries if you are not present in court? I find it hard to believe they would just drop the charges because they are expired

A crime of this seriousness would involve Interpol in the West. Not sure here ...

Read what the function of Interpol is and how it operates before posting nonsense,

That windscreen looks totally trashed. There is absolutely no way he did not know he hit someone or something. He was probably so wasted he thought it was just a person on a bike. Probably did not know it was a cop.

It was certainly on The BBC World Service Television (WSTV) promoting business in Thailand. Maybe "advert" was the wrong word. Currently Thai Airways also have an advert running on BBC WSTV at prime times which must cost a fortune. Indonesia have now jumped on the bandwagon and running as similar promotion to encourage people to do business there. BBC World Service Television. It's there for all to see.

The story is also on the Australian news site, here -

http://www.news.com.au/business/breaking-news/arrest-warrant-sought-over-red-bull-heir/story-e6frfkur-1226709489946

It says, in part -

THAI authorities are seeking an arrest warrant for an heir to the Red Bull energy drink fortune after he failed to appear for his indictment in the hit-and-run death of a policeman, a prosecutor says.

A lawyer for Vorayuth Yoovidhya said the 30-year-old heir was on a business trip in Singapore and was unable to return to Thailand for the indictment because he fell ill.

His absence means a speeding charge will be dropped because the statute of limitations expires on Tuesday. He still faces charges of causing death by reckless driving and not stopping to help, which carry a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Being heir to a large fortune can also work against you it seems. Slowly attracting attention around the world. clap2.gif

Its currently the 6th most read article on the BBC news website - one of the worlds largest.

That is some prime quality scumbag, I hope he rots in hell. Apparently the BiB can't be bothered to do their job seriously even when one of theirs gets killed. Even if they did, the judge in charge of the case was obviously bought, or he'd have put a travel ban on the guy. The whole mess is so sad and predictable.

Quite astonishing that at the very least the alleged perp of the manslaugher/homicide wasn't required to surrender his passport. This is what happens in most jurisdictions on those very rare occasions a person is not remanded in custody when facing the possibility of a murder/manslaughter charge - and it is done precisely to prevent "flight". Out of interest did the guy have to post bail and if so how much? I am not in anyway surprised but I think we should take stock of the fact that a new generation of young Thai people are emerging, the perpetrator's generation, and I don't think many of them will buy this nonsense or most of the other nonsense that goes down here.

The charge of causing death and damage to property through reckless driving will ensure his sentence is a light one.

The fact he isn't even in the country shows what he thinks of the charges laid against him; a brazen arrogance and indignation.

I said at the time that the attempt to bring the F1 to Thailand is their payment to absolve him of this crime.

For those of you seeking 'proper' justice in this case need to wake up and realise this is a society that is rotten to the very core; he has money and is influential thus is above the law.

If only the butler would have taken the fall for the crime as the victim's superior office tried to organise during the attempted cover-up shortly after the crime was committed all of this embarrassment for the family could have been avoided.

bah.gif

He is NOT,will NOT.....NEVER as in Neve ever serve one day in jail. The compensation has been paid a d rich people have a different set of laws than us common folks here in Thailand and the good ol USA! Period end of story. Finishe....not news anymore.....go away now !

Ah, the world service. Yes, they do have these annoying little country promotions. Always used to be " Malaysia truly Asia". Now it seems to be "Amazing Thailand" Thai Airways "Smooth as Silk" or some guy with an ipad trying to persuade us to invest in Indonesia. Saw one for "Marvelous Montenegro" once too.

Know what you mean now. Yes, do watch for the Thai ones.

Maybe not the whole world but it has made MSN website news page here in the US. So it is getting some airplay outside of Thailand. Guess the people who read this will see just how backa$$wards the Thai justice system is.

This case is followed by MSN, Yahoo, and several newspapers worldwide.

In a parrallel thread in Thaivisa, the case is also reported by the New York Times:

The same story with the rich kid in Bangkok who rammed the bus stop with his Mercedes. And Chalerm's son who shot a guy in a nightclub.

Then the was the MP who shot a rival in a gasoline station and the former tourism minister who defrauded the county of millions from the Bangkok Film Festival.

Money talks in Thailand.

Why wait until so close to the statute of limitation running out on any charges to bring it to court in the first place...................also im sure he was either driving under the influence of alcohol or cocaine, if not both so why no mention of that now?

The Thai justice system is a complete piss take on ordinary people, im not saying it would not happen in other countries but surely not as brazen as in Thailand.

I guess the real problem is that many Thai's are happy to let this go on as long as they too can get a little piece of the cake. If only they would realize that they would be far better of with a fair society and to get rid of all the parasites milking it.

Lack of education must have a play in this!

What a load of absolute rubbish. left on a business trip one business day before is court appearance. This Taksinitis sounds like a really nasty disease and he needs to be rushed back to the Medical HUB.

And of course he reported to the Thai consulate in Singapore to find an approved doctor as would be appropriate protocol. Kind of adds new meaning to homesickness.

My Reference to Thaksin was that he is rich and got convicted. I would guess all the threads at that time were saying that will never happen but it did. I am hoping some justice will come out of this and eventually Vorayuth Yoovidhya will be convicted as well.

Everyone was shocked back then when the guilty verdict was read as a mega-rich person is almost never convicted.

Agree with the hope that it occurs again.

We will have crooks reporting on bail at a police station and on a number of times some have failed to report and we will go around to their residence. They would seem so smug and wave a doctors certificate in our face and we would just laugh, shackle them and drag them off kicking and screaming to the cells and remand them with an additional charge of failing to abide by the conditions of bail. They actually thought that a certificate trumped bail conditions and would fight the extra charge in court. The magistrates would simply inform them that unless they were totally incapacitated then tough luck if they can drive past a cop shop to the doctors to get a certificate then they can report and sigh the bail book.

Their bail would be cancelled and they would be remanded in custody until their hearing date, however long that may be. This Red Bull scum should be arrested at the 1st opportunity and his bail cancelled and remanded in custody he is playing the judicial system as the fools they are. Crooks don't have the right to dictate the terms.
