BANGKOK, Sept 3 – Thailand’s rice exports this year dropped 5.1 per cent in volume and 5.6 per cent in value from January to July, compared to the same period last year, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Association.

Five major importers of Thai rice were Iraq at 576,494 tonnes, Benin at 442,776 tonnes, the US at 218,709 tonnes, Japan at 206,223 tonnes and the Ivory Coast at 193,585 tonnes.

Rice exports increased significantly in July compared to June thanks to higher deliveries of rice to Iraq and Iran, and parboiled rice to Benin and South Africa.

Thailand has maintained steady and continuous exports to major markets such as the US, Hong Kong, Ghana and Ivory Coast, the association said.

Thai rice was about US$60/tonne higher than that of competitors. Five per cent rice is sold by Vietnam at US$380-390/tonne, by India at US$410-420/tonne, by Pakistan at US$400-410/tonne, and by Thailand at US$442/tonne.

Rice stockpiles in India and Vietnam remain abundant and the two countries have continued to export their grain while buyers have stocked sufficient rice for a period and slowed their purchases, pending adjusted prices in the global market.

The association predicted that Thailand’s rice exports in August should reach around 550,000 tonnes thanks to declining prices which has narrowed the price gap between Thailand and other competing countries.

The major markets for Thailand’s fragrant rice are the US, Ivory Coast and Hong Kong, while white rice is mainly exported to Iraq, Iran and Japan, and parboiled rice is shipped to Benin, South Africa and Yemen. (MCOT online news)

Was the stuff sold to the Ivory Coast the lot they said they had to dump 20% of then said they would not buy any more?

Did I not read in a treasury report that either Iran or Iraq had not paid for a shipment?

And which one was it that said they had suspended buying Asian rice for 2 years?

Seems to be so many anomalies in reports from various directions that its difficult to believe anything.

What does a rice export deficit mean? That they are a net importer of rice? That they are exporting it at a loss?

China to buy 1 million tons of Thai rice

BANGKOK, 3 September 2013 (NNT) – China has agreed to buy 1 million tons of rice from Thailand, while expressing its interest in the Thai rubber industry.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, during her visit to China, met with China’s Prime Minister Li Keqiang in Nanning, where both PMs agreed to further strengthen their partnership and business ties. China is considered the biggest importer for Thai products and Thailand's second largest trading partner.

Both parties have agreed to increase their trade value to 100 billion US dollars by the end of 2015 as well as to increase productivity of agricultural products and enhance logistics systems of both nations.

According to PM Li, China is willing to buy 1 million tons of Thai rice, saying he has ordered related agencies to look into the matter. He also expressed his interest in the Thai rubber industry as Thailand has high quality rubber, adding that he will encourage the Chinese private sector to invest in the Thai rubber industry.

PM Li also backed the Thai Premier’s idea to connect Thailand and China through high speed train.

Meanwhile, Miss Yingluck asked Mr. Li for China to take part in Thailand’s solar energy project, while assuring that Thailand will act as a coordinator in connecting the ASEAN region with China.

The Chinese will get a very good deal. Storage in Thailand is full and the new harvest is coming.

Yes, although it was a 3 year ban from Iraq. So along with Ivory Coast, Thailand has managed to lose 2 of it's most important clients.

However, I feel assured that it will all turn out to be the fault of those damned foreigners... for not accepting being ripped off by our wonderful, ever smiling friends.

Are plans in order for when the "leader" returns to feed his homeland relatives and offer Thailand as a "one Party" block with their red flag to the Mother Country?

I just read an article yesterday that Thailand's rice stockpile was down to 10 million tonnes and the average selling

price was $700 US a tonne. This guy needs to get his facts straight. The government pledging program is a huge

success with the program making lots of money.

Remember also reading somewhere that China had not taken up a MOA to buy 2 million tons of rice that was signed 2 years ago.

I also see that China is not mentioned by Thai Rice Exporters Association as a major buyer.

The US has ordered every shipment to be inspected on arrival after a shipment was returned because of bad smell

.

A quote I saw recently, don't remember from where :

Meanwhile, Thai rice continues to lose its once leading share of the world market. The market mechanisms of the industry have been destroyed and, worst of all, rice farmers are still in a deep funk. Members of the "Poor People's Congress" are still camping out in front of the Finance Ministry demanding debt waiver from the government.

Both parties have agreed to increase their trade value to 100 billion US dollars by the end of 2015

Will that mean there will be even more Chinese things in the Thai market place competing with Thai made products?

Wow - another great deal negotiated by Thailand's popular and astute PM/DM. All you scoffers and whingers take note. What's more important - attending silly parliamentary debates, which are pointless because everyone knows the outcome; or pulling off mega trade deals? Previous experience of being a highly successful international businesswoman can be put to better use turning the rice scheme into a profit making successful endeavor based on sound business economics. The facts will speak for themselves when they are presented.

The above report doesn't make sense. I thought that Thai rice was over priced compared to the global market, and that was the reason why they could not sell it?

So how does this comment make any sense. If prices are declining even more surely that makes Thai rice even more expensive?

"The association predicted that Thailand’s rice exports in August should reach around 550,000 tonnes thanks to declining prices which has narrowed the price gap between Thailand and other competing countries."

My Mother always said "The problem with lying is you always get caught out because you can't remember what lies you told and who you told them to" ! Thanks Mum ! This article when placed next to the article from yesterday shows that either some journalists need to be sacked immediately, or some Ministers need to be sacked Immediately. The level of untruths and disinformation is simply shocking. And what will the Thai's do? Do like my wife, shake her head, say "Thailand is a very bad place', and then carry on as if nothing has happened. Is there a smiley icon that goes Aarrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhh!

It is called Thaksinonomics.

Never never give out the real facts and he is backed up by a cabinet member saying it is OK to lie if it makes the population happy.sad.png

Spout of one thing today and the opposite tomorrow and the population will believe you if you say but that dosen't matter Thailand still has the best rice in the world. Then they prove it by showing a picture with Yingluck almost eating a small spoon full.whistling.gif

Yes and no.

There plan was to connect Singapore to Beijing the Chinese capital Thailand is just in the way. To the best of my knowledge they offered to partner up with Thailand for the leg through Thailand but I am not sure what happened. Obviously nothing yet and considering they were going to have the project done by 2015 I think Thailand turned the deal down.wai2.gif
