Duckworth urges govt to look after soldiers in deep South

BANGKOK, 4 September 2013 (NNT) – Thai-born Illinois representative Ladda Tammy Duckworth urges the government to take care of soldiers working in the Deep South.

Lieutenant Colonel Ladda Tammy Duckworth, Thai-born US Member of Parliament for Chicago, during her official visit to Thailand from August 27- September 3, said she was proud to be a Thai and a part to strengthen economic ties between the US and Thailand, especially in automobile industry.

On the matter of the ongoing southern unrest, she declined to give any comments but urged the government to focus more on military personnel and take the best care of the soldiers deployed in the violence-torn areas as these soldiers are risking their lives for the people and the nation.

Miss Duckworth also mentioned about the human trafficking issue, saying she has already discussed the matter with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, during which both parties agreed to do what it takes to eradicate the problem. She added that if all nations work together, operations to tackle human trafficking will be more effective.

Tammy Duckworth was born on March 12, 1968. She is the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first disabled woman to be elected to the US House of Representatives, the first US Member of Congress born in Thailand, and the first female double amputee from the war. Miss Duckworth lost both of her legs in Iraq. However, she now continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard along with her husband, Major Bryan W. Bowlsbey who is also an Iraq War veteran.

That might explain the awkward listing of her exact date of birth (what journlaist would ever be that specific?!).

More embarrassing is the assumption that American congressional representatives use their military rank. She is in the National Guard and holds the rank of Lt. Col. She is not in active service and does not refer to herself as Lt. Col. Her correct address is Congresswoman Duckworth. She would be aghast to see the blurring of responsibilities.

The use of a military title having precedence over other is standard Thai practice so this usage is not surprising. An example of this is that all laws that were signed during the time of PM Thaksin are signed with his police rank.

I wouldn't hold my breath. The US has so many problems at home, the only way to camouflage reality is to keep uncovering a boogieman in someone else's closet. Can you say Syria?

While it may be standard it is indicative of a total tuning out of foreign customs--and proper address, which you'd think would be used at least when it comes to foreign dignitaries. But no. It's too much to ask. It's not like the Queen of England isn't referred to with her appropriate title when visiting non-monarchial countries.

1675 might be a little exaggeration since there was no United States at least on paper until 1776 and then until the war was over years later. In 1675 we were only sticking our noses into other nations' business as part of that small country England.
