Wrongly detained man gets Bt316,450 in compensation

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Pol Colonel Narat Sawettanant, chief of the Justice Ministry's Rights and Liberties Protection Department, yesterday paid Bt316,450 in compensation to a man for being wrongly detained in jail for 553 days.

Anukul Nithinusakorn, 36, had reportedly lost his national identity card and it was allegedly used by a gang to smuggle yaba.

The Criminal Court acquitted Anukul on grounds that there was enough evidence that he was at work at the time of the crime. His workplace requires a fingerprint scan for employees to clock in.

Anukul - who was given Bt111,000 in compensation for being wrongly detained, Bt105,450 for the loss of work opportunities and Bt100,000 for lawyers' fees - said the Lawyers Council of Thailand took up his case to file lawsuits in civil and criminal courts, adding that Narat's office would also help by asking the police to provide remedial assistance.

Separately, Narat also presented Bt370,800 to Sanoh Inphrom, 50, who was detained for 926 days but was finally acquitted because of the lack of evidence.

Hmm..... nearly two years in jail on evidence which most courts would have thrown out.

If only he'd been better connected. Or rich.

Bt105,450 for the loss of work

553 days in Jail

surly this is far under 300 baht per day minimum wage ??

Quote His workplace requires a fingerprint scan for employees to clock in....... sounds the sort of place that pays more the the minimum wage

There must literally be dozens, if not hundreds, in Thailands prisons.... imprisoned under false, or incorrectly prosecuted charges.

These 2 stories are rare.....difficult to recall many others that have been released in the past.

"There must literally be dozens, if not hundreds, in Thailands prisons ..."

There must be literally hundreds, if not thousands, in prisons in every country on earth.

estimated 10% in thai prisons are miscarriages of justice/framed by cops, so there are 25k innocent behind bars. Same 10% quoted in the usa.

Good that they were finally released, but even for Thailand those sums of compensation are pretty poultry, quite insulting. Guess the PT are trying to make room for all the Dems and rubber farmers they plan to incarcerate soon...
