Recent oil spill in Rayong fails to deter tourists

RAYONG: -- Despite last month’s oil spill in Ao Prao, Prao Bay, on the western part of Thailand’s popular tourist-oriented Samet Island, the beauties of Rayong’s other renowned islands still remain as must-go destinations for many travellers.

Foreigners and locals alike are attracted toSamet Island, which lies less than seven kilometers off the coast of Rayong province in the eastern Gulf of Thailand, offering the allure of a tropical paradise with reasonable proximity to Bangkok.

“Yes, we are aware of the situation through the news, but prior to travelling here, we made sure that our destination is on a different side to the affected Ao Prao. I would like other travellers, both Thais and foreigners to understand that the situation here in Rayong is normal, beaches are still beautiful. I normally stay at Wong Duen bay,” said Jatuporn Tunrerksataporn, a tourist.

Over 700,000 tourists visit the famous islands of Rayong every year, generating over 10 billion baht each year.

“Beaches and coastlines are still beautiful, with sparkling white sand curving between palms and crystal clear water. Natural ecosystems both on land and underwater are still pristine,” said Pisanu Kemapun, chairman of the Rayong Hotels Association.

With this confirmation, interested travellers can rest assured that Rayong – despite its recent tragedy -- is still a paradise of magnificent beaches, delicious seafood, and spotless nature. (MCOT online news)

Sure , 30 years ago maybe ..... I just wonder if they know what is crystal water ... check in Maldives, Polynesia, Caribbean , great barrier reef of Australia . I remember clear water also in Thailand ..but that was long ago .

I suggest they look up paradise on the internet and look for pictures, then you know what it looks like !!!!

Just a guess on my part. I am really interested in a beach this year to take my son to. Last year it was Krabi and that was a disappointment to both him and myself. Pattaya is off my list as is Phuket. Cha am might be the place to go.. But I would really like to here the truth about the beaches in Rayong

Just a guess on my part. I am really interested in a beach this year to take my son to. Last year it was Krabi and that was a disappointment to both him and myself. Pattaya is off my list as is Phuket. Cha am might be the place to go.. But I would really like to here the truth about the beaches in Rayong

The Rayong governor had said this in the oil spill crisis, exactly the same, this guy is all but a TAT licker.

You taking your son to a beach, and want him enjoy, Sorry to say start at Pattaya pier morning, get a ticket to Koh Lahn 25 baht ferry, every hour-45 mins crossing. A 7-11 is at the arriving pier, stock up, pay 25 bht (motor cycle) and go over the mountain to the main beach, masses of Chinese but after 1-30 pm the beach is near empty, the water is perfect for a youngster -sand white and sea blue green lovely, from the main beach a walk round the bay to catch the boat back to Pattaya, the kid would enjoy, I took some kids from a home -super day.

Can stay over on the Island, bungalow I believe.

Sorry to mislead you. I neglected to say he is 49. I will have to do a lot of research as he would like a little better night life how ever he is definatly not in to the drugs and alcohol scene. That was part of the reason I was thinking Cha am. It is close enough to Hua Hin for a little nite life or just browsing.

The last visit I had to Hua Hin was great, one day I drove due west out on a straight highway out to a waterfall, nice change from the beach.

I live on the mainland almost opposite Samet, there are some very nice beaches and places to go here. If you want quiet white sand beach then go east from Ban Phe to Laem Mae Phim and there are also some beautiful empty beaches between Ban Phe and there if you have transport. It's low season so it's quiet, I live on Mae Rhumphung beach and during the week it's 12km of emptiness but you do have rubbish on the beach from the weekender Bangkok crowd but most of the rubbish is from the squid fishermen, plastic sacks and sodium lamps, fluorescent tubes etc but it's a Thai resort so beer and food is cheap and good roads from Bangkok so don't believe what some idiot posted earlier. Samet's roads are a mudbath if it rains, don't know what they spend the national park fee on. Rayong has a lot going for so don't listen to the naysayers come and see for yourself plus songthaew travel is so cheap, 25 baht from Ban Phe to Rayong - eat your hearts out Phuket lol.

I was really interested in Sandrabbit's post. I have until Feb. to figure it out. But he did give me some thing to look at.

I walk along Mae Ram Phueng beach every day with my dog. It's always messy but yesterday it was covered in plastic sacks that had been washed up from somewhere, didn't look very beautiful to me.

I find it peculiar that protesting rubber farmers both in the South and in Issan are being detrimental to the tourist industry in Thailand (and they probably are inconveniencing some tourists but the government more) and yet swimming in an sea with an oil deposit covering the seabed , the affected sea and bird life plus the rubbish on the beaches and that is not damaging the tourist trade. Says alot about spin !
