Moving to koh tao

Featured Replies

Hi, can anyone please tell me in plain English how we go about being legal in Thailand and how much it's likely to cost.

There's me, 34 yo male, the wife who's 30 and our 6 year old son, I don't mind having to do the visa runs but is this possible from koh tao and how long is the journey and cost, I want my wife and child to be legal?

What's the best visa for us to go into thailand on considering we want to stay permanently?.

Any help or advise appreciated.

Thanks

You fail to give your nationalities which could play a major role.

We are all British citizens from the uk.

Child can attend school and get one year extensions and one parent can get accompanying extension if they have 500k baht in bank for 30 days. The other parent could possibly get a multiple entry non-o visa and make border runs every 90 days.

The best way to this would be to set up things with the school before traveling and get visas then with documents from school. The child and one parent would get single entry non-o visas that could be extended. And the other parent a multiple entry visa.

As it stands none of you actually qualify for anything other than Tourist Visas.

A triple entry would get you almost 9 months with extensions from Samui Immigration and 2 border runs.

If the child starts school this will give you more options.

Here is the official Police Report that deals with extensions of stay.

Might give you some ideas.

Police Order 2008.pdf

Since the OP doesn't mention working, I presume that he's of independent financial means. The 10 million Baht "investment" visa would be one way to go.

That would be clause 2.5 of police order posted by LB.

But would be an extension not a visa.

Is there an international school on Koh Tao I do not think so if your child went to a Thai school he/she would struggle. Koh Tao is a beautiful place but I do not think suitable for a 6 year old maybe you should consider Koh Samui as there are plenty of private schools he/she could attend. You do not mention how you are going to live which is an important factor. We all have dreams but you also have a responsibility to your child to ensure they get a good education I would think long and hard before you jump into the unknown I am from the UK with a UK wife and although retired it can be difficult dealing with immigration if I was married to a Thai it would be a lot easier a typical example is that as I am married to someone of my own nationality I have to show 800,000 in the bank or have a pension of 65,000 per month I f I was married to a Thai I would only have to show 400,000 in the bank or 40,000 per month and listening to friends who have Thai wives they are always complaining that the wife spends spends spends so where is the logic . Dare I suggest that next summer during the school break you come out for a full 6 weeks and see what it is really like you might change your mind I wish you good luck whichever road you choose

You are on an extension based upon retirement. OP is not 50 years old or over.

I understand that I am just trying to point out to the person that even at my age where I do have the income if your not married to a Thai life can sometimes be more difficult and I have now been living here for 8 years He gives no indication how he is going to live so I was just generalising to him that it is not as easy as we all think it is in fact it can be very frustrating at times when a new immigration officer comes along and has his/her own interpretation of the rules.

Hi, so this is the conclusion we have come to...

Koh samui is probably the best option for us, based on schooling for our 6 year old boy, jobs for the missus and me and overall cost of living.

We are not rich by far, we will have £15000 in the bank, plus £300 per month from the rental of our property in the uk, I will be establishing myself as a SSI instructor, I don't mind having to do the border runs, but we are wanting to settle full time so is this possible? We are going to look into getting appropriate visas for my wife and child, child will be in education full time, wife will be looking for either a teaching post, but only has her TEFL qualification, or some sort of sectaterail post..

Thanks for all the replies so far peeps...

You won't like hearing this, but the best advice is to stay in the UK.

Based on the above you cannot afford international schooling for a six year old kid. To put British kid through Thai local schools will severely limit his options in the future.

SSI Dive Instructor? Join the back of the huge queue of other Wannabees prepared to work for "Holiday Experience". Oh, and you need PADI as well, which will cost GBP 1,000. And if you can only speak English, then your chances are limited even more, loads of single Europeans trying to escape the economic mess in Europe prepared to work for little.

So who is going to look after the kid when you are working 11 hours/day at the dive shop and your wife is teaching TEFL (a secretarial job is simply not going to happen)?

Having a six year old kid is a HUGE responsibility.

Don't blow the 15,000 Quid on pursuing a dream in Thailand, many many have trodden that path and failed, and I personally know more than a few, who have headed back to the UK because it is simply not easy to make a decent living in Thailand and support a family.

Thanks for the advise in the last post, although we have already discussed the issues you have raised in depth, we know what we are letting ourselves in for and understand it is a huge risk, but what's life without a risk?

We have had a bad year, our son has just been given the all Clear from cancer, and we have just had enough of our lives here in the uk, it's got to the point now that we would rather be just scraping by with a low income and be happy, rather than working all hours god sends in a job here that we have to do just to pay the bills :-(

I am actually on my paddi DM course right now, and may have already passed my instructor before I come to Thailand, I said about being an SSI instructor because I hear a lot of schools are turning to SSI rather than Paddi?!

My cousin turned up in the Philippines 8 years ago as a Paddi open water diver and today he's still there as a course director! So it can work out, he's got a wife now who doesn't work and a daughter.. I believe in hard work and patience, then maybe dreams can come true :-)

cambodia is an easier option visa wise, vietnam too is a teaching option also has some nice beach resorts.

Another important point to be borne in mind is that there is no free NHS for us Brits living here in Thailand (nor for that matter in Cambodia and Vietnam either). You will therefore need to take out health insurance which for the 3 of you will probably mean not insignificant premium payments each year.
