ROME, Sept 12 – Thailand and Italy have expressed optimism that the formation of the ASEAN Committee in Rome (ACR) would enhance the relationship and cooperation between the Southeast Asian region and the southern European country.

The issue was discussed in a meeting between Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her Italian counterpart Enrico Letta during which they also talked about an initiative to link 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and partners of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which include Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

Ms Yingluck said the initiative, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), would also benefit Italy, if negotiated successfully. It would create the world’s largest trading bloc.

The Thai prime minister expressed her appreciation to Italy for hosting the 10th Asia-European Meeting (ASEM) in Milan on October 9-10 next year.

Ms Yingluck emphasised Thailand’s determination to promote economic, trade and investment development and strengthen relationship in various aspects, including anti-human trafficking.

She said Thailand, in its capacity as a member of the Human Rights Council, has given importance to human rights and people’s fundamental rights.

Leaders of the two countries also witnessed the signing of three memorandums of understanding on developing small- and medium-sized enterprises, cooperation between the Thailand’s Board of Investment and the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade, and military cooperation. (MCOT online news)

I wonder if they talked about the 2 Italians kidnapped by Thai police some weeks ago .... Posted Image

Yes, they did. Actually, she said that it was all a "misunderstanding"

The problem with Yingluck is she misinterprets the courtesy that other countries give her for being a pm from her country where she believes it's some kind of a trade cooperation. It's easy to understand that she doesn't understand courtesy because it doesn't exist in Thailand. Not in their vocab.

Yingluck must really feel insecure about the AEC continually trying to be recognized by countries outside the AEC.

I'm sure she's having fun traveling.

The problem is I didn't think an EU country can make independent trade agreements, I thought it all has to go through the Euro parliament?

wasn't it an italian partnership that left that elevated highway abandoned ?

The abandoned project I think you are referring to was known as the Hopewell Project (HK based). A modern day monument to Thai government business acumen.

Italthai is a big Thai construction company.

"She said Thailand, in its capacity as a member of the Human Rights Council, has given importance to human rights and people’s fundamental rights."

She insists on being clueless. Send back all her advisers that Thaksin got for her and go to any bar and she will get better advice. Let's see now what is it she is telling the world?

1 She is bringing unity to Thailand

2 She is bringing democracy to Thailand

3 Thailand has given importance to human rights and people’s fundamental rights.

Won't be long now and the world will be flocking to Thailand so they can learn how to accomplish such legendary prodigious feats in their own country.
