k9guy62
I realize this is their country, but it ceases to amaze me how dependent they are on our money for the development of their economy. You would think that our respective embassies and governments would seek to establish some considerations in the way of protecting their respective citizens if they want to continue to trade with respective foreign countries. Thailand is more dependent on foreign countries than foreign countries are on them. I really pisses me off to see a man in this state or any foreigner for that matter.
lapd
I wonder about the property....was it in his, or her name? how do we find out? Based upon the fact that an individual cannot own property in Thailand, and he clearly doesn't appear to be running a multi-million dollar company, then we know that the house would have to be in her name...! Last time I looked the maximum ownership rights available in Thailand were 65% of the floor space of a condo. It is amazing that people do not do their homework. I gave the money for a house I sometimes live in to my gf to raise our daughter. No rights. No papers. The difference was I knew I would have no rights if it all went pear shaped. No malice but plenty of forethought. I had other money and investments then. My other investments went pear shaped. We have since gotten over the fact I am a poor farang and living o/s at present. Embarrassing, but she has dealt with it. She seems to genuinely love me as does her father and at least 3 of her 9 sisters. Can't win em all. Trust issues abound with this life choice in Thailand. Its a great place for exercising the intuition. Some people wade right in with no safety net. Others are more cautious. It would be great to know how many successful stories there are. I think the successes would outweigh the others. In this little area of Isaan, most of the expats I know are quite successful, at least smart enough to do it right, and frequently have great relationships as well. However we are talking about village or country life. There's no tourism here and next to no "night" life. The people have less distractions. Alcohol and other abuse is a major obstacle. Simple question. If all these farangs are so 'successful' what are they doing living in Issan? The story implies a house not a condo. I think most people are aware of the rules about condos. louthlincs
*feel sorry for those this happens to. again, this kind of experience should be printed on a pamphlet and issued together with air tickets in country of origin, with a footnote in bold reading, and no, 'yours will not be different'. does the same think happen to our fellow expats in other s/e asian countries? be interesting to hear any unbiased views from people with experience in other countries in the region. Popular Post gamini
some of these critics are harsh. To live through life without ever trusting anyone is not my idea of a decent life. My Thai friend cheated me and my wife out of milions but the fact that he was a long time good friend hurt more than the loss of money. Everything is in my wifes name. If you can not trust your wife then you should not marry her . Unfortunately in Thailand it is the man's conciet that is the problem. He thinks he is so hansome or a desirable husband that his wife is marrying him for love and not his money. He should first look at his future wife and ask him self would a similar girl in his own country would marry him for love. He is too full of himself to admit that he could not find a young or desirable girl in his own country to marry him. You see so many young girls married to old men here who obviously married them for thier money and many are anxiously waiting for them to die or perhaps are conspiring somehow to get rid of them. I don't really get your account here. You claim your thai friend cheated you and i assume your wife is thai out of millions and then you talk about trust involving one's spouse when it was your friend that cheated you. Also well pardon me for saying this but it's ironic for you to talk about not trusting anyone and having a decent life when your good friend cheated you out of millions i mean see what that did to you. Yes we both suffered a big loss but unfortunately my Thai "friend" was too important to sue and he theatened my Thai wife with bodily harm if we did so. We could not do anything. He was my friend long before I met my Thai wife. But I went back to work made some more money. Yes I trust my Thai wife and she has everything now. As I said before if you can not trust your wife then you should not marry her. We celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary next month.
Korat28
I feel sorry for the Greek guy, but then again sh*t like this happens all the time. If you're a farang, either buy a condo in your name, or only buy a home with a Thai partner if you can afford to lose your property! I'll never understand why farangs pay for a house when it's not in their name. If it's not in your name, you don't own it! (Obvious, yes, but think about it.......) Simple question. If all these farangs are so 'successful' what are they doing living in Issan? The story implies a house not a condo. I think most people are aware of the rules about condos. That is about the only property I would consider buying since it can be in my name. In that case you have to be careful as to who owns/manages the building. So it is also a trust issue but a different sort. Yes, right, so the obverse applies. You can't own a house, because it is on "land" and you can't own the land! Deduction was involved my dear Watson. Success? Depends a lot on what you call success and what's wrong with living in Isaan? I know a guy living there with a beautiful lakeside property with a pool. Very nice bungalows her rents to Euro's. A lakeside bar run by another live in Swiss ex-pat who's lovely wife cooks good Euro food, income from the bar, the bungalows, palm oil, and rubber. A lovely little wife, two kids. A lot warmer than Europe, with, lets see, 1%, if that, of the paperwork and State interference in your life, if you live in most 'any' Western "democracy". Hmmmp. He's imaginative, has good taste and why would his wife dump him? He's a good bloke. The thing I like is Its a long long way from anything and everything else. Some of us don't need the city. When I'm there I am treated like a King. In my life which has been long already and looking longer, I've never been treated so well. Not by a long shot. Praise the Lord and pass the Leo. If Isaan had a surf beach, I would live there forever.
SOTIRIOS
This guy isn't a victim. He is a former inmate and a violent, abusive and dangerous alcoholic. This is the second incident from him in less than a week. He needs to be taken into custody by the BIB before he hurts some one or kills himself...or both. Earlier in the week he threw every bit of glass and crockery in his house, plates, cups, saucers, light fittings, out on to the street in front of his yard. This was in the evening around 8pm at night. This is a busy but small thoroughfare and both lanes were scattered with shards of broken glass and pottery. A dozen or so people had the tires on their cars and motorbikes shredded as a result of this lunatic and his acting out. He was hurling abuse and kitchenware at several young Thai girls that were commuting home from work on their scooters. To my utter amazement the police were called but did nothing because the Greek was out of his tree on booze and he had locked himself inside his yard behind the gate. He claims to be broke and has no money for food. But have a look at the photos in the article...How come he has money for cigarettes and booze? This loser needs to be locked up and then deported. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Popular Post Nip
Silence is golden? It is estimated that there could be anything from 500 to 1,500 similar cases in Phuket at the moment and not all who chose to set up home in the cradle of corruption are boozed up love lorn gob-shites. I would estimate that many other distraught victims are reading this thread at the moment and are scared through circumstance and embarrassment to 'come out' so to speak in fear of ridicule be it warranted or not? But that is what is needed now for the victims both foreign and Thai to come together and pool their resources and knowledge to attack this cancerous corruption head on. To the high and mighty "it could never happen to me" brigade I would say. How many of you at one time or another purchased property back home in your own countries using a solicitor and ever actually gripped the title deeds to the property in your grubby hands? You of course trusted in the law and the legal profession. But what happens when every link in the chain is corrupt? In Phuket there are criminal gangs who target and snare the wives and girlfriends of foreigners. They are mostly simple gullible country girls and are easily drawn into the web of corruption. Baht bitches, bar girls, opportunists call them what you will, the influential spider who has spun the web of deceit in Phuket has many legs in the police, law offices, banks, land office and in the courts and thus they are impervious to single foot soldiers but what is needed in Phuket is an army to demand that justice be served. Yes you may rightly argue the toss but this is a forum where we all turn to for help at some time or other without wishing to invite inane ridicule. Cheap shots here serve no purpose. I would ask that all who have knowledge of the widespread property corruption in Phuket PM me in confidence anonymously if you wish and I will insure that it gets to the right people because believe it or not there are many Thai's of influence who do care. Making this post I realise that I too leave myself open to ridicule but to the few who want to piss on my post feel free but I hope many more will piss in the pot.

louse1953
Rent house is better and give "partner" a joint ATM account with small baht in it, then things like this can not happen, nuff said Unfortunately there are a lot of really dumb guys out there. I would never ever trust a Thai enough to put a house in their name unless it was something I could afford to lose. Giving her full access to his bank account is just dumb. I personally know a guy who had a joint account with his Thai gf and told her it was only for on going living expenses. She waited till he left the country then cleaned out the account and bought herself a condo with the money. Not even joint accounts.3rd party acc. with same bank, transfer as needed. Interesting that many people criticize this man as being dull witted because he bought a home he cannot keep, as you can just as easily be divorced by a woman in the western world, and the courts will often grant the wife(and children) ownership of the house. The sad reality is that many men just feel obliged to buy property in a place where they probably never get any rights whatsoever. If it made him feel any better, he might want to know how many times the house was mortgaged without his knowledge.
