Lite Beer
Ayutthaya, Lamphun under floodwaterBy English News LAMPHUN, Sept 18 - Forest runoff triggered by continued heavy rain hit the northern province of Lamphun this morning, while six districts in the central province of Ayutthaya are now under floodwater.About 50 homes and commercial areas, as well as hundreds rai of farmland in the Lamphun provincial seat, are under up to nine metres of floodwater.Workers in a Lamphun industrial estate struggled to reach their workplaces today as a portion of 500-metre road leading to the site is also flooded. In the central region, Ayutthaya governor Wittaya Pewpong said he has instructed local officials in Phak Hai, Sena, Bang Ban, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Bang Sai and Bang Pa-in districts to closely watch the water situation. If the floodwaters get deeper, he said, the affected district will be declared a flood disaster zone so that the initial budget of one million baht will be urgently allocated to help the victims. The governor said residents living along the river have been hit as Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province released water into the Chao Phraya and Noi rivers which flow through the central province. He estimated that the level of water will continue rising at least 20 centimetres daily.Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya provincial administration organisation vice president Chatree Yooprasert said a community in Bang Ban district was submerged under one metre of floodwater in the same location of Thailand's worst flooding in 2011. At that time the community was under four metres of floodwater. (MCOT online news) -- TNA 2013-09-

culicine
9 meters of water? Hmmm. It makes more sense that the water would be 9m above mean sea level....so that really gives no indication of the depth of flooding. This time during the 2011 floods, Ayuthaya and surrounding areas to the north already were already extensively inundated. While we have had a some rain doin in BKK recently it seems to have been relatively dry this year - not sure of the actual numbers but I don't expect anything like to 2011 floods unless with have several tropical depressions pass through one after another for the next two months. Hard to see what is really happening/ Seems as though it dosen't count unless it is Bangkok being flooded. Is the flooding being caused by holding back water that would run right through Ayutthaya if it was not being held back in order to keep Bangkok dry? As for Lamphun didn't Yingluck order them to replace all the trees with in 3 months in 2011in the area in order to stop the excessive runoff? Where are the politics in such flooding events. This government nor any other cannot protect people and assets from temporary flash flood events whether caused by the flooding be of the canyon and or waterfall flash or of forrest-run off flash flooding. This type of temporary event can only be avoided if local population quit inhabiting floodplains downstream of canyons and forested hillsides. The UK also has speculative construction companies that build housing on flood plains. These irresponsible companies have no problem finding idiots that are prepared to buy their houses and live happily in it until they loose everything in the inevitable flash flood in due course. Then they too blame their government. Go figure! However Governments are responsible for protecting their people and assets from systemic flooding. This is what the present 350 billion suit of flood prevention projects is all about.

Now isn't it time for the electorate to ask where the 350 Billion went that has 'already been accounted for' Mmmmmmmm, I wonder I wonder if the Government can offer a 'double or quits deal' on the money they still owe everyone for flood damage from the last time.
