PM places emphasis on children and women

BANGKOK, 24 September 2013 (NNT) – Prime Minister and Defense Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the first woman to lead this country, is keen on eradicating child and woman abuses in the society.

Miss Yingluck has met with officials from the Office of the Attorney General who gave her a tour through an exhibition organized to show that child and woman abuses still exist in the Thai society.

The PM said the government would do whatever it took to protect the rights of all children and women and a network will be set up to help achieve the goal.

According to Miss Yingluck, violence among women and children is the number one problem the government needs to address, adding that there will not be equality in the society as long as violence continues.

The government has, therefore, set up the One-Stop Crisis Center (OSCC) and the Woman Fund to help those in need or when they fall prey to abusers.

The exhibition has also been organized in honor of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, who has been the forefront of the campaign to help fight against child and woman abuses in Thailand.

There's been quite a few high profile cases of late of violence against women and children. Look at the maid that was covered in scars after years of abuse by her 'employers'.

And Yingluck has not uttered a single word about any specific case.

She's a disgrace as far as "champions for women and children go". Especially as it's the number 1 issue.

Institutional human trafficking and prostitution, slavery, abuse of power, withholding evidence, aiding and abetting a convicted criminal, profiteering, running a house of ill repute and living off immoral earnings. Apart from that, have I missed anything?

Embezzlement, fraud, obtaining goods by deception, misuse of public funds, election fraud, presenting fraudulent documents to a government official. And making up stories. Is that it? Oh, leaving the light on at bedtime.

To see the real "number 1 problem", she might try looking in the mirror, doing her own makeover instead of allowing the hired help to handle the cover up.

Some individuals wake up in a new world each day, there are specific places where they can be taken care of. Head of, or participating in important decisions of a government, is not one of them.

Is this the same PM that was called "Stupid Bitch" by the opposition leader a few weeks ago?

What an accomplishment.

Yes, quite an achievement by the leader of the opposition to bring his position to the level of a tuk tuk driver.............

Would this proposal also include the manipulation of younger sisters by older brothers thus making the older brother a criminal, hence the younger sister an unwilling victim forced into a form of filial slavery for the sole benefits financial and power-wise of older brother?whistling.gif

Just out of curiosity, can you cite a few instances of western leaders commenting on individual crimes of violence against women and children ??

Is it commonplace for say, European heads of state to comment on individual rape cases ??

( Excluding of course, the ritual hand wringing of American presidents when a loony runs amok with a gun he just bought in Walmart )

A genuinely worthwhile cause if it can really be administered and make a difference-maybe I am naive but I hope it flies

You are not naive. It is a worthwhile cause but she is using it as a cover up for her governments inability to do some thing about the floods and using it as a cover up to corruption and the rice scam. Also the lack of any improvment ion the education system here in Thailand.

It is a pretty low thing to bring up when 25% of the country is flooding and she says they have it all well in hand.

Its so important to her, thats why she ignored it for years and spent months working hard on getting her fugitive criminal brother a new passport instead.

And the giant demagogic face screen behind her. "This meeting is about the children and the women! PT promise you we'll get round to all that boring reform stuff eventually, in the meantime heres my big face up in lights!" <applause>

A sound bite, akin to the Pope saying; 'let's find a peaceful solution' to one conflict or another.

Offices will be set up, dozens of department heads will be assigned, hundreds of more bureaucrats will get sat at desks to shuffle worthless pieces of paper and appear busy, ......and nothing will be done.

It's like the gov't initiative of a few years ago: to check food trucks coming in to Bkk, to see whether any produce had too much toxic residue. The program lasted less than one day, and was dropped. ....or the gov't mention of cleaning up Thailand's trashy beaches.

"The government has, therefore, set up the One-Stop Crisis Center (OSCC) and the Woman Fund to help those in need or when they fall prey to abusers."

How will the One-Stop Crisis Center help? Is it going to provide free anonymous housing for the women and children where the abuser will not be able to find them? What about vocational training so they can be self sufficient? Will there be qualified counselors? Will it be totally independent from law enforcement agencies? After all, if you have been reading the news lately, many of the abuses towards women have been perpetrated by those who are supposed to be protecting these same victims.

It is easy to set up an office with an enormous sign in front. Effectively addressing the issue is another story. Perhaps the first step is to demand that the opposition leader apologize to her in front of all the news services for calling her a "Stupid Bitch". That would show that she is serious about no allowing women to demeaned and abused in Thailand. After all, if she doesn't stand up for herself, how can she stand up for other women?. ..or, is this just another dog and pony show to make it appear that something is being done about a serious problem ingrained within Thai society?

I agree with you for the most part. The only thing i would like permission to disagree with you is the "stupid bitch" comment made by the opposition.

What he said was "อีโง่", which is definitely not as harsh as "stupid bitch" (thank goodness). It is better translated as "dumb broad".

Though I understand the important thing is that he shouldn't be resorting to name-calling (even if it's true), they should at least translate it right.

This is a bit rich, considering that Yingluck must have forced her son to do some seriously unpleasant work when he was barely out of his diapers. Evidence for this abuse is the family photograph when Yingluck, her boyfriend Anusore, and her 7 year old son Pipe posed for the cameras on the day that Yingluck was installed as the official PM. Her poor 7 year old son had a chest full of medals denoting extreme bravery in military situations. IMO a 7 year old child should be playing football or flying kites, not earning awards for his gallant military prowess.

Be fair, she did try and get him a game of football with Chelsea!

Amazing Thailand.
