Industrial estate in Ayutthaya threatened by floods

BANGKOK, Sept 24 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra admitted concern today about the flooding situation at a major industrial estate in the old capital of Ayutthaya.

Many areas and historical sites in Ayutthaya, 80 km north of Bangkok, are now surrounded by floodwaters. Several industrial estates including the flood-prone Saha Rattana Nakhon estate, are located in the province.

Ms Yingluck said the construction of anti-flood walls around the Saha Rattana Nakhon estate were finished a little too late while the situation at other industrial estates was controllable.

This year’s floodwater volume is less than last year but downpours especially in areas below reservoirs or dams, and high tide, could impede the flow of water to the sea and flood some provinces, she said.

She was optimistic that an integrated water management meeting and an urgent meeting with governors of flood-prone provinces including Bangkok, chaired by Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan, would lead to better coordination and management of the flood situation this year.

Another critical zone is Kabin Buri district in the eastern province of Prachin Buri where the government must closely control the opening and closing of a sluice gate to prevent wider inundation, she said.

“Flood water has been released into the Chao Phraya River in large volume but the river could take more. This year’s flooding should not be as bad as in 2011,” she said to reassure the public. (MCOT online news)

AYUTTHAYA, Sept 24 - The governor of this former Siamese capital today said this year's flooding will not be as severe as in 2011 and that the flood prevention plan has been implemented to protect industrial estates which were hardest hit last time.

Ayutthaya governor Witthaya Pewpong said water has been released downstream to pave the way for more upstream water which will flow into the central region later this month.

Mr Witthaya said he believes Ayutthaya will not face flooding as severe as two years ago.

Regarding the five industrial estates -- Saha Rattananakorn, Rojana, Banwa HighTech, Bang Pa-in and Factory Land, the governor said they are located inside the flood prevention dykes which have been enforced to up to a four-metre height after the 2011 flooding.

Mr Witthaya said each industrial estate also has its own 4-5 metre high dykes.

The governor however noted that only Saha Rattananakorn industrial estate that has not finished construction of its flood prevention dykes but the province has a back-up plan to handle its case.

Meanwhile, one death was reported this morning in Bang Ban district.

Kim Samart, 87, suffered emphysema and his condition worsened last night but his family was unable to take him to the hospital in time due to high-level of floodwater.

His funeral was also forced to be held in a temple, four kilometres from his house as the district temple is flooded. (MCOT online news)

This puppet government should stop stealing money and wasting time getting dear leader back and tackle real problems like the flooding. They should have done the environmental studies and give openness about spending on the projects then they would have been done. The dear governor forgot to mention Rojana Industrial Park, where Honda is located, which according to the other newspaper, is of high risk of flooding!

After the 2011 flood, I told my landlady to move the water pump up higher. Nope. Here it comes again. Will just move it myself this time. Just in case they decide to flood Phutthamonthon again. I remember how hard it was to find and buy new water pumps after the last time.

They had 2 years to make improvements and build dams, here in Bangyai they were building a sluice but money ran out (too much stolen hail the red thugs). So now we got a partly build sluice... that is incompetence and theft and falls on the shoulders of the government.

Now there were many projects that were stalled that could have helped all over the country but they could not go on because the government did not do impact studies or and give the required openness about spending.... again that falls on the shoulders of the government.

So no.. they can't control weather but they could have done their job and prepared better. They did not... because its a puppet government that only wants dear leader to come home and does not like openness about anything as it reduces their chances to cheat.

So I am not holding them responsible for the weather but only for their thievery and incompetence.

I can flush the commode twice in Chiang Mai and it will flood a few days later in Ayutthaya, three rivers converge there it floods there every year why would anyone build an industrial estate there to start with.

Many people held her predecessors responsible in 2011 and with a little bit of sanity, they will even do that now.

But to be fair: YS had 2 years now...and did nothing, nada, zero and zilch to prevent another disaster.

It is not the weather.

It is how you read it, if you learn from it and what you do about the effects.

And on that she and her government failed big time.

Really don't want to put a dampener on this topic but when the foreign firms in Ayuddhya were abandoned by the authorities who rushed only to assist the Chinese owned companies and left the others to - literally - sink - they learned a valuable lesson.

When Thai Government officials talk about flood control - they mean to the needy with the biggest red envelope.

Drain offs, side canals, pumps, barriers needed to protect people against the normal "didn't someone tell <deleted> Shinawatra's sister it happens every year?) flooding - are not built, are not available.

As the waters rise - so does the size of the red envelope.

Most of the foreign firms went out and purchased their own equipment having noted the quality of those in authority.

Flood lands / water meadows. These can absorb and divert truly heroic amounts of water. But the landowners - won't permit it - can anyone guess why?

Two days ago she said "dont worry about the floods," and now she says she's "concerned about the floods."

Next week she'll be on TV wearing a souwester and a lifebelt, crying into her latte while mournful panpipe music plays in the background.

These places never used to flood when Bangkok was allowed to have an annual flood too. Blocking the natural path of water aint the brightest of ideas.
