websites for getting world news

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a good website for news. I have been defaulting to google news, but they're too heavy on the entertainment crap, what one of the usual attention seekers did today, etc. Keeping stuff like that in its own section is one thing (like sports), but when the ‘top stories’ include that kind of stuff it gets on my nerves. As I write this, google news posts six ‘top stories,’ two of which are celeb crap. On the other hand, I’m looking something a little more concise than the well-written articles of The Economist for when I just want a quick idea of noteworthy events of the past 36 hours. BBC and the big US networks and wire services are out. I like Al Jazeera’s live feed, but they’ve cut back on its availability, and their written articles usually don’t compare to their broadcast reporting.

I’d like to know what sites people on here use for ‘quick news.’

That's not an easy question.

I have the same problem, I can't find a good news provider, they always stuff useless headlines into "top stories" while at the same time missing major topics.

On my phone, I tried finding something better than News Republic, tried half a dozen services, and then returned to News Republic.

Thread is here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/659180-good-news-provider-app-for-android/

The problem is all these "news releases" which PR services try to get into the news to promote their services/product or name/brand.

Yes it's annoying, yes, it's a loss of time, and no, I haven't found a good news source which prioritizes its items by impact.

Thanks for the News Republic info, hadn't heard of them before.

Weird thing is though they provide apps for reading the news on mobile gadgets but they don't have a way to read their content via a plain, old web browser. Or am I missing it somewhere?

The last straw for me was when reading news originating at the google news page I eventually found myself on a page where they had along the right-hand side, with all the other links, a picture of a backside (clothed) and the caption "Whose ass is this?"

It gave me pause. "Am I getting my information from a website that runs 'mystery ass' contests?"

newsnow.co.uk

It's a news aggregator.

Liking the newsnow concept, just simple RSS feeds from major news sites. One complaint would be that they haven't learnt about opening links in new tabs rather than new windows.

Another one for the OP.

http://rt.com/

unless it is Russian News, then it is just a little bit too biased!

Does your browser not have an "Open Link in New Window" option?

Anyway, I normally scan down the list and "Open in New Tab", and then when I've finished selecting, go and start reading them.

I had similar need and did an simple drupal website, which handles mainly Phuket (and F1) news. http://panphuket.com/

It would be possible to do similar for world news, but finding/knowing the good feeds is a bit problematic at least for me.

If you set up a profile in NewsNow there's an option to open articles in new tabs.

Do you know how stupid I feel right now? You probably know that I build in php, html and css so I spend my entire day working with the internal workings of websites. I test in FF, iE, Chrome, Safari, Dolphin, etc and never think about how I do that or how instinctive it is for me to just middle click or right click! Naturally some browsers interpret "_blank" as new tab and some don't but I never get near that as an issue as I instinctively know what each one does and doesn't (in iE's case) do. I can only guess that I saw something that looked SO "Web 0.6 beta" I only left clicked!

More coffee before posting next time! Anyway, nice news aggregation service.

The BBC has a massive pc site and an android app which is very fast. I think it's BBC.com but you can Google it.

Forget all that superfluous clicking. I never do. In Firefox, the QuickDrag extension is the bee's knees: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quickdrag/

Tweak the preferences slightly and you're good to go. I go to a news site or google and just drag everything I want to look at and by the time I've finished most of them have loaded. :)

Other browsers may similar addons but I mainly use Firefox. The lack of such an extension for Opera is a major turnoff. It's that good.

news.yahoo.com used to be good, but they changed the format and I don't like the new format. You might. So now it's mainly cnn.com and foxnews.com (Brits, soil your kickers now). Also dailyrotation.com for the geek news.

I'll take a look at some of the suggestions here.
