I did my Thai culture course last weekend. Some representatives from TCT also observed the course, and briefly discussed, with the university staff, the possibility of setting up tutorials to assist people with passing the teachers license exams.

From the sounds its still in the ideas phase, and will need the various different universities to present proposals and have them approved by the TCT (e.g. Very unlikely anything will happen for at least 12-18 months).

However it sounded like:

- previous exam takers would get preferential spots in any tutorials.

- tutorials may just provide you with the knowledge required to more easily pass some of the exams

OR

- tutorials might be able to administer a "post test" which could passed in lieu of the TCT exam.

- I have no idea which institutions would offer these tutorials, or when they might be available. From the sounds the institutions would need to submit proposals to TCT and they'd then take it from there.

It sounded all a bit up in the air and definitely something more on the horizon than anytime soon. However I thought I'd share the news, as its a bit of light at the end of the tunnel for anyone who wants to get their teaching license.

Last year, I met the head of the TCT and was invited to lunch, in simple words I was told farang needed to learn Thainess and Thailand had no need for any farang teachers. I wouldn't count on anything. Have you ever seen a copy of the English version of the TCT license test? An example of their best work!

I think the Graduate Diploma in Education/ Teaching Profession will be installed again.

What do you mean? This course has existed for a long time in a number of colleges - such as the Grad Dip available at ABAC. I assume these courses would qualify one for the teaching licence. Teachers could do it if they wanted, but most seem to run the gauntlet of the 4 teaching exams. Only one teacher has passed these exams at my school. A few have formal qualifications, but most are still doing the exams. last time I heard, they have also cut down the frequency of running the exams... that culd become problematic for some teachers who are near the end of their extensions on the provisional licence.

Update on the exams, they have been discontinued for Thai teachers due to fact less than 10% were able to pass the most recent exams. Thai teachers now must take a one year course to get their teaching licence, done. Foreigners now must take 5 test not 4 and the next tests will be announced January 2014 and posses a degree related education. The only other thing new from the TCT is provisional licence is now limited to 4 years only.

That's a very unprofessional comment from a so-called 'professional'. The TCT is just a cash cow and has no real interest in improving teaching standards in this country....we can see what happens with the standard of english when only Thai teachers teach it. 12 years of english and 18 y.o M6 graduates can barely utter a 'hello'.

Case in point, The Culture and Ethics course is so important to the TCT that every farang in Thailand must be taught Thai culture. Now wouldn't it be more helpful and prudent to require a best teaching practices course or education development course. The TCT wants you to take a Thai culture and ethics course to learn how to Thai dance.

Yes I did this course a number of years ago. Got to learn all about Thainess - such as how Chalerm and his mafia operate lol. It really only has value for those having been in Thailand a few months. Some of us had been here 10 years or more, so it was a waste of time.

Taking a course makes complete sense - in Australia, anyone teaching in a regular school must do a teaching qualification - that usually occurs with teachers in private schools. It wouldn't work so well for foreigners here because the salaries are so low in most schools.

Your course might have been different than mine, what did your course have to do with teaching or teaching a foreign language?
