I am over 60 years old. When living in Bankok I wanted to donate blood for 2 reasons:

1. It is a good thing to do to help your fellow mankind.

2. For a man especially, iron accumulates in the body over the years and can cause many health problems especially as one ages. The easiest way to reduce iron and other heavy metals in the blood is to bleed...that is, donate blood. Women do not have this issue because of their monthly period that causes loss of blood...except...when they are older or due to operations they no longer have monthly period and then iron also accumulates. This is the reason that daily vitamins sold in the U.S. for senior men do not contain iron.

Once I asked my driver to take me to the Red Cross location to donate blood. When we arrived I was greeted with the normal smiles..showed them my U.S. passport...but...then they said "sorry, you are over 60 years old and cannot donate blood in Thailand." As it turned out, my Thai driver donated blood but I was not allowed to.

Is this true only because the particular location I went to in Bangkok or at the whim of the person who took my information there, etc. I am now 73 years old and donate blood on a very regular basis in U.S. to the Red Cross and they call me on the telephone regularly to remind me it is time for me to do so again. Any knowledgeable comments are welcome.

Hi I used to donate blood very regular but since I had a triple bypass 22 years ago they will not take it in New Zealand, I am now 72, blood glucose is 5.1 and a very low coolest rial count, no problems have sex regularly no need the pills or anything. People say I look in my mid 50s. I get my blood tests 2 times a year and my doctor says every thing is good all the time.
