Warathep inspects rice mortgage scheme in Lopburi

BANGKOK, 12 October 2013 (NNT) – The Deputy Agriculture Minister has paid a visit to Lopburi Province to follow up on the government’s rice pledging program.

Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office and Deputy Minister for Agriculture Warathep Rattanakorn, during his visit to Lopburi, inspected the 2013-2014 rice mortgage scheme and the registration process.

As of now, more than 80 percent of the rice farmers in Lopburi have already registered for the program.

On the same day the deputy minister traveled to Lopburi’s Muang District where a rice mill under the rice program was located. Minister Warathep was informed that the rice mill had pledged over 100 tons of rice from 40 farmers.

Mr. Warathep also revealed that 2,600,000 farmers nationwide have already signed up for the rice program, while the number of registered farms is 46 million rai, 444,000 of which came through the community system.

Before leaving the province, the Deputy Minister for Agriculture urged the officials to check all processes, ranging from farm inspection to certificate issuance, in order to prevent fraud and corruption.

He added that if any acts of corruption are found, legal charges will be pressed against the wrongdoers.

As a primary producer these idiots should have allowed the agricultural futures exchange to become the global leader in softs. Rice, prawn, tapioca, rubber..... But oh no. The arb trade would have guaranteed realistic price discovery with CboT and Tocom, amongst others, but 10 years on and they have created such a scheme only a single chromosome being could have thought up. But it's our rice na..... Bloody glad it isn't my taxes paying for such folly.

How would they Chinese middle man make any clip then?

"........the rice mill had pledged over 100 tons of rice from 40 farmers."

I'm not a farmer or familiar with yields per rai, but 40 farmers produce 100 tons? Small farms?

Does that sound accurate,or is The Nation's reporting skewed again?

While on rice :

I read elsewhere that the Chinese Premier has said there is no G 2 G deal for rice between China and Thailand.

However Chinese private rice importers will import 200,000 tons of Thai rice each year for the next 5 years from Thai exporters (they can trust).

The Philippines and Indonesia have also said they have no G 2 G deals with Thailand with the Philippines saying they have bought all the rice they need from Vietnam.

So tell us again Mr Minister, who are you selling it to?

Was the G2G deal with China rotten rice for rotten pads?

" inspected the 2013-2014 rice mortgage scheme and the registration process."

Can anyone here confirm to me that the scheme started about a few days ago? Furthermore what can you observe of this scheme or process by going to somewhere?

The purpose is a photo op, and to make some positive comments about how all is well, with the added reminder that all corruption, if discovered, will be punished in accordance with the law.

Window dressing springs to mind.
