maybe instead of the 500 Bath they should have to take classes in behaviour while travelling as a condition to get a visa, I am sure this would stop a lot of louts from all over like Australians, British, Russians and other Eastern Europeans, as well ad Indian and Chinese Tourists from reaching our shores. When I was a kid in the 50's in BKK you never heard of Tourist cooking on wok burners in Hotel rooms or demanding discounts fom tour operatos and you never saw drunken Westerners running round BKK or beach resorts and classy travellers then respected local cutoms and would never dream of damaging a temple. The decline started with over enthusiastic R&R American soldiers from Vietnam and it went downhill with the West getting wealthier and now hit new lows with Eastern Europeans especially Russians and also Indians and Chines having money to travel but not having the faintest idea of how to behave as a visitor

Thailand is creating this problem for itself. There are drunken louts everywhere, every country has them and where do they go when they want a holiday? In my country if you ask people what Thailand is famous for they would say ladyboys, prostitutes, mail order brides, corruption, cheap booze and cheap living. This image is portrayed in films and TV a lot. You only have to watch The hangover, Alan Partridge, Little Britain, Bangkok Dangerous or many others to see this reference. This might not be what locals want to hear but it is true nonetheless. Thailand wants quality tourists but it does nothing to tackle this image and until it does this will never change. Thailand has the recipe for creating and attracting this kind of behaviour and whilst there is money to be made in those "enterprises" I do not see how there will be a change. In short, if you want quality tourists then create a quality image.

Isn't it time they change the policy toward granting visa free entry for these Russians? More and more they cause problems for everyone and don't have any respect for other countries values. Hope this guy goes in jail for a few years or gets a one way ticket to Siberia, there he can drink vodka and starts a fight against a reindeer or polar bear!!

What nonsense. There are equally bad behaved Americans, French, German, Dutch, Iranian, Irish as well as assorted Africans and Arabs. Louts and hooligans come in all shapes, sizes, ages and sadly all countries have their share.

This particular drunken idiot happens to be Russian. A nation that happens to have a large problem with alcohol abuse and excessive drinking. Destroying a religious symbol and disrespecting anything associated with religion is not usually tolerated in Thailand so I'm sure he will be suitably punished, one way or another.
