Govt plans to push the nation as an iron distribution hub

BANGKOK, 28 October 2013 (NNT) - The Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) is currently conducting a feasibility study on establishing an iron distributing hub on the Thai – Myanmar border, as industrial in the area grows.

OIE Director Somchai Harnhirun revealed that the OIE has received a 200-million-baht-budget in 2014 for use in the study and preparations of information covering the nine institutes under the Industry Ministry’s jurisdictions.

He said that at the moment the OIE has placed an emphasis on the establishment of an iron and construction material distribution center, pointing that Thailand can take the opportunity to expand its construction market as the neighboring Myanmar is currently undergoing its reformation.

According to Mr. Somchai, Thailand's demand for iron has increased at the rate of 13-14 million tons annually. Vehicle, construction, and electronic industries dominate most of the demands, making it necessary for the country to rely on imports.

During the first 8 months of this year, Thailand imported 10.8 billion U.S. dollars worth of iron, an increase of 0.8 percent from the same period of 2012, and accounting for 6.07 percent of the country’s total imports.

The OIE Director also pointed out that the demand for iron would increase tremendously when the Government's 2.2 trillion baht infrastructure development projects as well as other related projects from the private sector start hatching in the near future.

500 blankets given out to elderly in Chiang Rai as winter approaches

BANGKOK, 28 October 2013 (NNT) – The Interior Ministry has given out 500 blankets to elderly people in Chiang Rai Province as winter is approaching.

Deputy Interior Minister Visarn Techateerawat, along with his team, went to Chiang Rai’s Mae Lao District where the deputy minister chaired the opening ceremony of the renowned Long Boat Racing Festival. Later on, Mr. Visarn proceeded to Phan District to meet with the elderly whom he handed 500 blankets to in a bid to keep them warm in cold weather as winter is closing in.

As for Si Sa Ket Province, people are flocking to second-hand clothing markets to buy winter clothes such as sweaters, jackets, scarves, and gloves. Second-hand clothes are proved more popular than brand new ones because they are still in good condition, whereas the prices are way cheaper.

Meanwhile, 200 people in Nan Province have already fallen ill as their bodies could not adjust to the rapid change of weather. Most of the patients were elderly, children, and those people with congenital diseases.
