marry a thai, people will look down on you,,,,

people you cant trust ,always trying to rip you off,,,,,

the drivers cant drive,,,,(westerners all experts drivers,,lol)

and many more negatives,

im not trying to say thailand is perfect,,, but please this is were we chose to live, no one helda gun to my head and said jake move to thailand, marry a beautiful young lady, have a baby,,

so please gentlemen,,,,,

i love it here, ive got a beautiful,(in my eyes) wife, aq very beautiful daughter, ive got a great life, i still work, but when i get home i can sit on my porch with a beer of glas of wine, with not a worry in the world,

im not botherd if one of our dogs bark, or the chickens crow, or even if the price of a beer goes uo by a bht,

my life is so much happier here in thailand,

Jake, you do have a beautiful wife and daughter, no doubt about it. I grew up on a large ranch and dogs and chickens don't bother me. We had a bunch of a special breed of dog that was born to herd cattle, and they were outside dogs and never pets. They had a good life, good shelter and food, but they were working dogs and they could get noisy as could the chickens we kept.

As a matter of fact I miss that. Sometimes I envy you. This is why I look at Isaan for a place to stay for a while. Just get out of the "new" Thailand and try to kick back. Life is too rushed sometimes, and then we complain.

Jake, we can always rely on you to get people to focus on the good things in life.

I live in Chiang Mai with my gf. I like it here and feel very relaxed... While I was working in the UK, I had high BP, high cholesterol and was getting too damned stressed about inconsequential cr-p. Since I came here, BP and cholesterol have both lowered, I don't drink as much, I am far more chilled and enjoy life much more (OK, retirement may have something to do with that ) We occasionally escape to my gf's village south of Lamphun, where it is even more relaxing in the heart of a farming village. It reminds me of childhood days on the family farm in Lincolnshire.

I'm lucky that I have a lovely gf (I think I'll start a thread on "Why my gf is different....." ) a comfortable occupational pension that would not go anywhere near as far in the UK, and I was going to say something about the cold weather at home in Scotland, but as you're over there suffering it, I'll choke that one off!!

For me, the only down-side of life here is that I miss my kids and grandkids......and decent fish and chips, of course! But like you said, no one's forcing me to stay here, so it's got to be OK on balance.

I love Thailand after almost 13 years, she is still amazing to me, I found the best wife in the world, a Thai family I am lucky to be a part of, live in a village of great salt of the earth people.

I live in the country and it is a quiet very relaxing type of living, we make and grow much of our own food, just the right life style I always searched for, I found in my golden years.

When I thought Thailand could not do any more for me this morning , I became a member of the Thai 30 baht hospital scheme and I from today on for the next year I am eligible for treatment like that of any Thai in the country cost 2200 baht per year, 600 baht medical examination.

Just when I realized that I was doomed to die a painful death, The Thailand I love came to my aid, Thank you Thailand!

I thought about this a little and two main things came to mind, "mai pen rai" and "up to you". These two well used sayings sum up so much about the reason I love Thailand so much.

Not many places left in the world you can buy a piece of land, build whatever you want, even paint it any colour you please, "mai pen rai" & "up to you". The live and let live attitude is just great. No one hounding you for taxes, permits, licences etc. It all makes for a less stressful life in so many ways. Yes we have to comply for our Visa each year but thats really a small ask and minor incinvenience for what you get in return.

Want to keep some pigs, up to you, decide to add chickens, mai pen rai, want to have a party and play loud music til 3 am, mai pen rai and the local cop will even join you if you ask him, Try doing any of that in the Uk, yeah right !

So as I lay here in the hammock, slung between two trees in the garden, looking across the lawn to the beautiful girl I was lucky enough to marry, to the daughter I gained who now has her first baby on the way and the circle of life continues.

The dogs playing and patrolling the boundary, the cold drink in my hand and the warm sun late in the afternoon, the green rice fields stretching out to the mountains in the distance and I realise how great it is here, everyone should take time to stop occasionally and just appreciate how beautiful life is here.

Last night I had a friend visit from the old country - we'd set a time for weeks & I was excited. We met at my local and laughed for almost 5 hours ate & drank it was a super evening. My intent wasn't to make him jealous but i think deep down he was, the one thing I noticed, I was damn proud to call Thailand home.

Sometimes on here I read stuff like the 711 doorbell saga, now the damn thing bothers me so Jake thanks for the timely reminder we have a pretty good life here.

Sunday Evening Last.

An 60 YO impacted wisdom tooth had finally broken through the gum over the past few months. Sunday arvo the pain started. Nerve pain. Sunday evening the pain intensifies. Nothing I can do to stop it. Taking paracetamol is like chewing M&Ms. M16 and Oral-T has no effect. I am pacing the floor trying to hold out until monday morning until I can get to a dentist. By 04:00 AM I am beside myself with the pain shooting right up into my brain (no jokes please, I do have one). So at 0400 I front up at 'Emergency' at my local hospital. The doctor checks it out and prescribes a powerful opiate based pain killer. They also make an appointment with the dental department for 0900 that day.

They ring me at 0800 to confirm. I front up at the dental department at 0900. The dentist says he can 'fix' it and it should be ok. Bulldust says I. Get it out! I was expecting surgery a 'dockyard job'. Is it doable? Can you do it? Sure, he says, I can do it. Go ahead, says I. Laew Laew Krab! But give me a double whack of local anesthetic can you. OK he says, I can do that too, So the extraction is done, and he stitches up a hole you can drive a Mac Truck through.

To the dispensary, for pain killers and anti-biotics.

Yesterday I get two phones calls from the hospital wanting to know if everything is ok. How am I doing? Bleeding? Pain? Nope, everything is fine, See you saturday to have it checked and the stiches removed.

Cost 2000 Baht! (and this would be deemed expensive as the hopital I went to is one of the more 'glamour' ones.)

Try doing that in Australia.

Impossible. Even if you could, it would be closer to Two Thousand Dollars - not baht.

There are so many positive things I could write, the above is just one example of many.
