webfact
Hua Hin to Host Red-Whiskered Bulbul ContestHUA HIN: -- On 3rd October 2013, the Mayor of Hua Hin Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, with the Chairman of the Association for Red-whiskered Bulbul Breeders in Thailand Mr. Suithep Bunyawatwanit, the Chairman of an Association for Red-whiskered Bulbul Breeders in Western Thailand Mr. Sumet Suphithip and a member of Hua Hin Municipal Council Mr. Cheewin Phiew-on, attended a press conference to describe the red-whiskered bulbul contest in Hua Hin.The contest will take place from 2nd to 3rd November 2013 at the field of Somdet Phra Suriyothai Military Base. Winners will be awarded Royal Trophies of Their Majesties the King and Queen. Red-whiskered bulbuls are much favoured among Thais throughout the country. They are highly prized and kept as pets in many families. Birds can fetch as much as 300,000 baht. The best ones have to be carefully protected against bird thieves. This can pose a problem because the red-whiskered bulbul (nok krong hua juck) enjoys being out in the sunshine.Red-whiskered bulbul contests, designed to find the bird with the best voice, are organised throughout the country, including in Bangkok. Each week, there are no less than 5 contests. A good singing bird can sing smoothly and melodiously. The length of the song is not a consideration.Contests are judged by experienced bird-song experts who take notes and award points. Birds are placed in categories and eventually winners emerge. The Hua Hin contest has two main rules: internationally recognised rules and 4-round based rules in two main categories: the international and the golden voice ones. For the golden voice category, 140 trophies will be awarded to the winners.A Brief descriptionThe Red-whiskered Bulbul is about 20 centimetres (7.9 in) in length. It has brown upper-parts and whitish underparts with buff flanks and a dark spur running onto the breast at shoulder level. It has a tall pointed black crest, red face patch and thin black moustachial line. The tail is long and brown with white terminal feather tips, but the vent area is red.The loud and evocative call is a sharp kink-a-joo (also transcribed as pettigrew or kick-pettigrew or pleased to meet you) and the song is a scolding chatter. It is more often heard than seen, but will often perch conspicuously especially in the mornings when they call from the tops of trees. The life span is about 11 years. An unmissable event for bird lovers and bird watchers, the Hua Hin red-whiskered bulbul contest welcomes both Thai and foreign participants and attendants. For more information, please contact 085 7024988. -- Hua Hin Today 2013-10-
