Oil-contaminated Ao Prao Reopened

RAYONG, 2 November 2013, (NNT) - Ao Phrao on Samet Island has officially reopened to visitors after chemical residue is no longer found on its beach.

The beautiful beach of Ao Phrao was closed due to oil spill when PTTGC's pipeline broke near Rayong's Map Ta Phut, leaking at least 50,000 litres of crude oil into the sea on July 27.

Deputy Director General Thirapat Prayoonsith of the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation led an expert team to conduct seawater quality tests. The results show no trace of contaminated chemical substances from three spots in Ao Phao.

The level of whitewashing on Ao Phrao's coral reefs has diminished to just only 10% from the 60-70% previously found, which means Ao Phrao's ecology has started to return to normal since the end of July.
