Police threaten to take legal actions against Uruphong protesters

BANGKOK, 3 November 2013 (NNT) - The police announce to take legal actions against anti-government protesters at the Uruphong junction after they refused to leave the area. Spokesman of the Center for Administration of Peace and Order Pol.Maj.Gen. Piya Uthayo confirms the police have no plan to crack down on the protest.

The police would submit evidence related to the protest to the court for consideration in a bid to reclaim the Urupgong Junction, the spokesman said. Pol.Maj.Gen. Piya reiterated that the police would not use force to disperse the protesters and would maintain the same number of security personnel of 44 companies at the protest venue.

As for the Democrat Party-led protest against the amnesty bill at the Samsen train station, the spokesman said it was still peaceful with more people showing up over the weekend. The center had instructed the Metropolitan Police Bureau to closely monitor the rally and prepare back-up plans in case the protesters traveled to other places. Security measures for the Samsen train station protest focused on weapon search and screening, he said.

The center has called on anti-amnesty bill protesters in other provinces not to gather at City Halls as it fears that they might lay siege to the places.

Poll: Amnesty bill row worries people most

BANGKOK, 3 November 2013 (NNT) - A survey on the public’s political worries conducted by the Dusit Poll shows that a majority of people are concerned about conflicts on the amnesty bill and fear that protests against the legislation might turn violent.

According to the recent poll conducted with 1,229 people in Bangkok and the vicinity, most of the respondents or 54.25% said their concerns over the protests were mainly caused by the prolongation of the amnesty bill conflicts. They said they were afraid that there would be violence and suggested the protesters gather peacefully under the law and deal with their opponents with reason.

31.97% of the respondents are concerned about corruption and abuse of power, saying that there is still the patron-client system in the Thai politics and Thai politicians lack morality and ethics. They suggest that punishment for political corruption should be more severe and people with bad records should be prevented from politics.

The poll also demonstrates that 13.78% of the samples are worried about political divisions and a lack of unity among politicians. They believe political problems in Thailand obstruct the country from developing and urge politicians to have conscience and work in the best interest of the country.

HINDU TEMPLE
Entry to Mor E-Dang cliff temporarily closed

The Khao Phra Wihan National Park will be temporarily closed from November 4 onwards, as Thai officials are prepared for the International Court of Justice's ruling on the Preah Vihear case on November 11.

Saksit Pholsapsiri, chief of the national park in Si Sa Ket’s Kantharalak District, said that this is to ensure the efficient security operations and prevent protests at the Mor E-Dang cliff, which is near the Hindu temple.

"From November 4, tourists will be barred from reaching the cliff and the national park would be closed until the situation is deemed normal," he said.

Today, the park refused to sell tickets to six members of an anti-Thaksin group, led by Samarn Sringarm.

Saksit said that the decision was made on consultation with government security units. It was concluded that the group wanted to go to Mor E-Dang cliff for non-tourism purposes.

The chief said that the situation near the Thai-Cambodian border is peaceful now. To assure villagers of safety, village security guards now stand ready.

TU lecturers lash out at bill

BANGKOK: -- The lecturers of Thammasat University's Faculty of Law issued Sunday a statement against the government's amnesty bill.

The law is unconstitutional, they said. The legal process is not transparent and rushed, though a law like this demands extensive public comments.

They added that the statement is issued on realisation that the law violates basic human rights and would damage the Thai legal and judicial systems.
