BANGKOK: -- An opinion survey conducted in 20 Northeastern provinces reveals that a majority of respondents wants to see former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva stand trial for his role in the deadly 2010 crackdown.

Mr. Abhisit and his Deputy Prime Minister at the time, Mr. Suthep Thaugsuban, have been charged with murders by the Division of Special Investigation for their authorisation of the military crackdown against the Redshirts protests in Bangkok which resulted in the deaths of more than 90 people, most of them civilians.

The ′blanket amnesty′ proposed by Pheu Thai Party to the Parliament would dissolve Mr. Abhisit and Mr. Suthep of their charges, while former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, the brother of PM Yingluck Shinawatra, would also be cleansed of his corruption convictions.

But the survey, conducted upon 1,190 subjects by Isaan Poll, indicates that 72.5% of the respondents prefer to see Mr. Abhisit and his former deputy face the court prosecution, whereas only 14.4% wants them to receive amnesty.

Additionally, only 36.7% of the respondents agrees with an amnesty plan for Mr. Thaksin.

As for their opinion toward ′amnesty for all′ proposed by the government, a majority of 46.6% of the respondents say they are against it.

The evident lack of support for the government-sponsored Amnesty Bill is particularly striking as the Northeastern region, or Isaan, has long been known as a major stronghold of Pheu Thai Party and the Redshirts movements.

In what promises to be an alarming fact for Pheu Thai Party, the survey also indicates that the support for the ruling party among the regional population has dropped from 44% to 34% in the wake of the attempt by the government to pursue the blanket amnesty.

The survey was published at a time when Redshirts movements appeared to be increasingly alienated by the Pheu Thai Party and the government. Many prominent Redshirts leaders and activists have condemned the ′blanket amnesty′, accusing the Pheu Thai Party of reneging on their vows to hold those responsible for 2010 crackdown accountable.

Facing widespread discontent from both allies and enemies of the government, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday announced that the government would not contest the Senate′s decision if it chooses to reject the ′amnesty for all′ draft, virtually signaling that the Pheu Thai Party has given up its effort to pursue the bill.

Funny thing is Abhisit is also on record as saying he doesn't want the amnesty either... so really only leaves Thaksin and certain PTP Mp's that do... strange

The figures sure do show that the right person, with the right funds and influence, would do good to start a new political party right now .One that it and it's potential senior members are totally distanced from both the Phea Thai and democrat parties. Just who that person/persons is to be is anybody's guess.

I'm definitely not a PTP/Thaksin supporter, as some may have guessed, but I'd like to see him put on (a fair) trial as well. The biggest question is, however, would the "majority" who want to see him on trial accept the outcome if they don't agree with it? If it did come out that he actually ordered live rounds to be fired at protestors in a non life threatening (to the army) situation, then let him face the consequences. If he didn't, and it is shown that the army acted beyond their orders, or did indeed face life threatening situations - having seen members of the forces blown and beaten up nobody can say there were none of these at all, then set him free, but I honestly can't see any change in the opinions of the majority of those against him should that happen.

One thing to add, even if he is found guilty of excessive force, that in no way would exonerate those on the other side who also used it or ordered it. And it is the ordering that is the key, as not even his deepest critics are suggesting he personally went out and shot people. One doesn't have to be holding the gun, or even in the country, to be guilty.

who ALL want Abhisit to stand trial.

Or you could do a realistic poll across the entire nation,

not done at political rallies or in red shirt strongholds, that

would give a realistic estimate of actual national sentiment.

I know you are joking and just trying to prove a point, but I actually think most people in the south, not to mention Abhisit and Suthep themselves want this trial.

They know they will win, and it sends a much stronger signal to be proven not guilty in court, than to get an amnesty, which does not clarify whether you were guilty or not.

At the same time Thaksin also knows Abhisit and Suthep will win in court, and he does not want them to get that victory, as it will make him look like an even bigger coward because he fled from his trial, so he needs Abhisit and Suthep to accept an amnesty somehow.

The red shirts in Isaan have no knowledge of the law (or anything else), and have been told so many times by their leaders that Abhisit and Suthep will go to jail, that they actually believe it. That is why they are so eager for the court to proceed. Wait till the day the court finds Abhisit and Suthep not guilty, there will be a lot of red shirts around with a confused look asking eachother something like: "but how can that be?? Khun Tida promised us they would go to jail!!"

I think the majority of residents, of Isaan would love to see ALL Democrats,

hung,drawn,and quartered ,never mind brought to trial,and at the same time

Isaan is a long way from Bangkok and a lot of the pollsters have probably never been there. No matter what the former PM did they would not be impressed or vote for him, this is plain vindictiveness. I thought Abhisit was very re strained in the way the rioting was handled. It was the rioters who kept provoking the authorities, going where they asked not to, storming a hospital among other things, what was the man supposed to do they would not obey the law he had to send the army in and everyone knew there would be bloodshed. The protesters still could have withdrawn but again chose not to and seem well prepared to take on the army, good Thai citizens then, now with a different lot/bunch/govt in power more to Isaan's persuasion seems like a little revenge is a good thing.

This does nothing for reconcilliation, if that can ever be achieved here.

Abhisit and Suthep have been charged but not convicted of being involved in the deaths of 90 plus people in the 2010 Red Shirt protests. I suspect they will never see the inside of a prison cell.

Thaksin who was convicted of corruption and broke bail by fleeing to China and has been on the loose ever since. He was also in charge when over 2500 people were killed in the drug related crackdown he authorized. He was also in charge when 85 died at Tak Bai and in charge when 32 died at Krue Se mosque. He will never see the inside of a prison cell. He may not even make it back here the way things are going for him.

There's a great possibility this sham will be cancelled once the senate has seen it.

Yes that would be one where FAIR JUSTICE was carried out, corruption was targeted and The Government of Thailand (red yellow pink blue whatever colours!) tried, ever such a tinsy winsy little bit to try to do something for the peope instead of pocketing BILLIONS for themselves.

Let's not forget that the Red Shirt leader( Mr. T. ) was telling his followers to go out and create violent scenes, such as the burning of the mall !!
