ATM Card Renewal - A Catch To Watch Out For....

Featured Replies

On my visit to Baan & Beyond on November 1st, the opening morning, I acidentally tested out their customer service by arriving at the checkout with two cartloads of stuff only to find that having rung it all up my ATM/debit card had expired the night before. Silly me.

They were very helpful and put everything to one side while I drove over to my branch of Kassikorn Bank to get a new one. After a short wait I got to see the right person who (with some embarrasment) told me that had I come the day before it would be free but today she'd have to charge me a "commission" of 300 baht. Given these cards have a 5 year life I asked her how I was supposed to know about this curious rule and perhaps it would have been helpful if they'd sent me an email or letter to remind me about the expiry in time to take advantage of their "free offer". The usual amount of shrugging, cor-torting and hopeful smiling ensued so I went to see the manager who politely told me that I had been reminded more than once. Hmmm.

It turns out that the bank's ATMs are sensibly programmed to remind you when your card is about to expire. "Not in English." I replied confidently and then realised I almost never use the English option when getting money out - the Fast Cash screen in Thai is quick and easy but since I don't read Thai so it could be warning me about the end of the world or an impending coup and I'd still be caught napping. It turns out that the expiry notice is in English and Thai and appears for at least a couple of weeks so it was my turn to do the cor-torting.

The manager waived the charge since it was only the day after but I promised to spread the word, so diary your expiry date or use an interface you can read if you don't want to get an irritating fine from your bank.

You must have been a customer for a long time.

My SCB & BKB ATM/Debit cards I got in 2009 expire in 2019

Or does Kasikorn have a shorter shelf life?

Thank You for the warning though as i did not know till I went

& looked after reading your post.

Yup, I always get the reminder at the ATM about 2 weeks before the card expires to get a new one before the expiration date and it's free. Only paid the 200 Baht once when I opened the account 7 years ago (used to be 200 now 300). The message only pops up perhaps 3 times during those final 2 weeks.

BTW if your Kasikorn card is damaged or lost, it's only 100 Baht to replace it.

Thanks for the heads up. It's a good write up. It's not just humorous but delivers the intended message with no uncertain term.

Some people, like myself, never look at the message on the screen but just keep punching on the keyboard to complete what we come to do. Now, after your message, my wife and I really need to check our cards on the expiration dates since most are in our kids' accounts, and they only visit Thailand once a year.

It cracks me up on the word "cor-tort". The first time I saw it, I thought it was a mistype. The second time I saw it, I thought it's a word I didn't know. So, I looked it up in the dictionary and, as expected, no such word. It's only then that I realized it's a Thai word meaning apologize or apology. It's also funny that, we, English speakers, quite naturally use "cor-torting" instead of just "cor-tor" which I think may be more correct.

Oh, Greenside, I always use your version of the CM map when navigating in the city. Any more interesting places to put onto the map? Thanks.
