PREAH VIHEAR
Testimony to Parliament scheduled for tomorrow

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will tomorrow lead the Thai legal team involved in the Preah Vihear case to Parliament, to explain facts and information on the International Court of Justice's verdict.

Arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport today, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said that it is important that Thais share the same understanding towards the verdict for the peace of both nations.

He noted that the understanding would then pave way for Thailand’s proposals to the Thai-Cambodian joint committee.

For now, Thailand would also work closely with Cambodia, so that the information of both sides is similar.

"These are to allow both countries to move forward. We must preserve the relations with Cambodia as our co-existence would be forever. People of both nations are happy with the verdict," he told reporters.

He added that in negotiating with Cambodia, the government would assure utmost transparency to ensure no conflict of interest.

Joining the testimony in Parliament will be Virachai Plasai, Thai ambassador to the Hague, who will arrive tomorrow.

I am confused. What is there to negotiate. Except for the fact that PT is tryig to save face the world has spoken.

Cambodia gets the temple and the area around it as stipulated. Thai's get to move out of the area or be part of Cambodia.

This idea that they did not say the mountain goes to Cambodia and did not mention a specific size of map is crap.

The best thing they can do ow is apologize for losing and focus on helping the people affected.

OOPS forgot, Thaksin never does anything wrong or is that the problem.

The latest ruling confirmed the previous one that the temple is Cambodia and redefined the temple as including the entire promontory, the Northern side of which Thailand has fenced off with barbed wire in 1962. The 1962 ruling put the temple in Cambodia due to the French map which also gave the entire 4.6sq km including the Phnom Trap hill to France (i.e. Cambodia) but the court didn't rule on that in 1962 because it wasn't specifically asked to. In 2013 it couldn't rule on that because it wasnt' in the 1962 ruling (Catch 22).

Therefore it is up to Thailand and Cambodia to negotiate what to do with the 4.6 sq km. Even the Northern part of the promontory that had to be returned to Cambodia has to be negotiated because the court provided no detail map or coordinates. Various estimates put at somewhere between 0.3 to 1 sq km.
