Business group seeks impeachment of pro-amnesty MPs

BANGKOK: -- Somkiat Homlaor, leader of the Business Club for Democracy (BCD), on Tuesday called for the impeachment of ruling-party politicians who voted for the controversial amnesty bill in its third reading in the early-morning hours of November 1.

The club held a rally in Bangkok's Silom business district. Somkiat later read a statement proposing that organisations gather signatures of eligible voters in order to impeach the 310 MPs.

"We don't think the government will stop [attempting to push the bill]. We have also called on the government not to issue an executive decree on amnesty," Somkiat told The Nation.

While he was satisfied with the Senate's rejection of the bill on Monday night, he still did not trust the government not to push the bill in the future.

In the statement, the club also opposed the amendment of Article 190 of the Constitution to allow the government to make international agreements more freely.

Somkiat said yesterday's rally was aimed at thanking all those who joined forces to protest against the controversial amnesty bill. The BCD leader said his group would further monitor the situation to see whether another rally will be needed.

He declined to comment on whether his club will support or follow the civil disobedience measures called for by the Democrat Party, saying his club's members have not discussed the issue yet.

With the Democrats at risk of being banned, the PTP being impeached, that leaves us with only darling Yingluckgiggle.gif (who never voted for/against anything)

Lord have mercy on Thailand!!

Maybe Thailand needs a period without any government whatsoever, couldn't be any worse?

The two best periods of government in recent Thai history were by (non-polical) cabinets led by Anand Panyarachun (****Thai language edited out****) in 1991-92 and again later in 1992. While the two governments were short-term affairs, they included a range of the best (and most honest) technocrats in the system. And unlike their predecessor government (the junta) or their successor(s) they instituted a series of important reforms.

Well worth a look at his Wikipedia entry. Pity he is (a hale and hearty) 81 now as Thailand needs someone like him again.

Thai language edited out of post. This is an English language forum, English is the only acceptable language, except in the Thai language forum where Thai language is allowed.

I think you should read the headline again - unless you believe granting amnesty to criminals and interfering with the legal process helps democracy.

Actually if the Shin clan were removed from the reins of power, there is a good chance that the Dems would agree to a grand coalition which, in theory anyway, could allow a selection of the better MPs from both parties to form a government. Yes, there are a few capable ministers in PTP who can think for themselves.
