bumpkin Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 This is the longest post I have ever made here. If you have the time to read it, you will understand why I was am suddenly so wordy. Tonight there is a fundraiser on Thai TV at 8:30. I commented on it at the Bangkok Post, but the moderators never posted it. You can also donate directly to the manila chapter of the red cross, which I recommend (all things considered). I sent 6000 baht yesterday. It is cheap to be a hero today. For 1000 baht, the cost of a couple bottles of Pipers, a family of four will have rice and medicine in 2-3 days, instead of the 1-2 weeks it will take for the Western cavalry to arrive and take action. If you read the article above, that means those without food for the last five days will die before the Big Guys can arrive. This is not prediction, it is fact. Human beings cannot live without food for 19 days. There is, therefore; the real prospect of cannibalism. It is cheap to be a hero today. If I asked you in person, and showed how there was no scam involved, I know half of you would do it. The help incoming is many days away, a funeral away for these people, and limited. The Red Cross is coordinating, meaning they are also going where the Cavalry ships and planes are not going. Amazingly, the logistics are well-coordinated. Probably good old UK and US process flow theory in action altogether. The area of destruction rivals 40% of the total area of the Kingdom of Thailand, and the Philippine population is more than double of the Thai population. Please consider it. It is equivalent to 30 of 77 provinces being annihilated here. Please. If this happened in your home country I would write a letter like this, if I knew the channels I recommended were not extortion artists. Just so you know, the American Red Cross runs the Philippine branches. They are audited by the IRS (called the Infernal Revenue Service), and have a tight rein on incoming funds. The Red Cross has 24% operating costs, but the food ration I stated was after the 'admin cost reduction'. In the Philippines, 760 baht buys a LOT of rice and medicine, enough to feed and care for four people for two weeks or more. The link takes you to a secured page, and if you scroll to the bottom you can use PayPal, Internet ATM cards, and internet active Visa/Mastercards (all processed by American Banks, who are real b_astards about IRS audits, because the IRS is the only federal agency that can body slam them). It is cheap to be a hero today. Be a hero. Lead by example. Show that ten men and women of the West have more combined heart than all the millions of corrupt politicians here put together, and I am meaning all of Asia. The link is at http://www.redcross.org.ph/donatenow If you can help, please help. Please. Who knows who you might save? Maybe some child who grows up and cures leukemia, or invents cheap solar energy, or gets a job in Bangkok in a few years and inadvertantly meets one of your family in a zebra crossing (and you never recognize each other as you smile and go on)... Sincerely, hopefully, and with respect and civility, Me PS: Please forgive the longest post I have ever sent to Thai Visa Forum. This is important to me, and I don't even know anyone there that is in the scrum. Wholeheartedly endorse your appeal for Charitable donations through reliable agencies. The USA and UK Navies' vessels should arrive by Friday morning, with their helicopter capabilities and communication facilities, they will undoubtedly be able to access the remote areas, currently isolated by destroyed infrastructure. Many countries have already sent 'first response' medical personel, but getting to the disaster areas is proving difficult. (BTW, Philippine population is about 150% that of Thailand, but the population density is about double) 1
Larry001 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I have spoken to a number of Thais (inc business people) and they are totally unaware of what has happened. As one shopping center lady manager replied " l only watch Thai news and what is happening with red shirts" She could not care less as do many others in the LOS. 1
ultimate weapon Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Malaysia and indonesia hasn't helped either. Please stop dictating how countries should help other countries. The middle eastern countries didn't help their neighbours either. There are world wide organzations like red cross to help countries in need and during diaster times. All of these are western run. Most western or richer countries will help like the US for example. 1
ultimate weapon Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I wonder if the philippines helped thailand during the 2004 tsunami incident. I don't think so but the philippines is so poor i don;t think they could even afford to send a team.
MAJIC Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) Thailand is almost bankrupt....what money are they going to donate? What can Thailand donate? Maybe some Rice Second thoughts, maybe a lot of Rice What can Thailand donate? Similar kind of Aid, that Thailand received from around the World for the Tsunami disaster of 2003! Short memories often go hand in hand with deep pockets. Edited November 13, 2013 by MAJIC
Torrens54 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Aid isn't being distributed in the Philippines mainly because of the hopeless Central Government. All that "stored" THAI Rice could be put to good use but that might need some joint action from both sides of Thai politics. The Chinese are showing an utterly mean spirit in the matter. For crying out loud, even the Japs are doing a lot better, although some of the older people in the Philippines probably think it is the Second Invasion, considering the current argument over territorial rights. Can only hope that the various authorities "on the ground" can get their act together and not just see this as a way to "skim" the aid that is being sent.
MrBrad Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Just to let you know, FangFerang, that we're taking up your challenge, and helping the cause, I just sent via PayPal US$105 (4,500 pesos) to the Philippine Red Cross. The link is at http://www.redcross.org.ph/donatenow 1
alexander69 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I am amazed with you TV members living in Thailand for many years. You should know by now that Thai people hide behind this pretence smile and never think and be concerned about anything else except their own selves and their immediate families. Donations is only for the local Wat and that is because they believe that by offering the 100-200 baht all their sins and wrongdoings will be forgotten. Only in the case they are going to loose face to the international scene may be and I repeat may be they will do something to show themselves up. So let's wait and see what will happen! Here here, you have hit the nail on the head,,,,,,,,to enclosed in there own troubles to care about anyone or anything except MONEY
Popular Post Robby nz Posted November 13, 2013 Author Popular Post Posted November 13, 2013 I still insist that Thailand as a country should be there now. But as they are not then their navy ships should be on the way, their air force planes should be in the sky with fast response medical teams and food, particularly rice. Great that individuals can and are making donations but Thailand and other ASIAN countries have (had) the ability to be there quickly when other countries will take longer to arrive. To me that they are not there is a national disgrace. It should now be a priority in ASIAN talks that a disaster response plan is put in place so any future disaster in a member country triggers an immediate response from all member nations. . 3

The link is at http://www.redcross.org.ph/donatenow Did you happen to note the exchange rate that PayPal was using? I know that in the past where I have made payments going from $ to Baht, their exchange rate was between 1 and 2 baht per dollar less than the TT rate. Just curious to see how much they are skimming from donations. David
sirchai Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Thailand is almost bankrupt....what money are they going to donate? What can Thailand donate? Maybe some Rice Second thoughts, maybe a lot of Rice What can Thailand donate? Similar kind of Aid, that Thailand received from around the World for the Tsunami disaster of 2003! Short memories often go hand in hand with deep pockets. I used to live in Phang Nga in 2003 and we'd just moved to the northeast when the Tsunami hit that area on Christmas 2004. We're crying, when we saw the disaster on TV, even the ID card of a Thai friend they're looking for.. Germany for example had sent 10 million Euros first Aid, but almost nothing arrived at those poor guys who'd lost all and many relatives and friends. Including foreign tourists. We drove to Phang Nga immediately and there was no first aid to see. Only the dead bodies, pretty difficult to find out who it was, as some were in salt water for a longer period of time. Then you couldn't even say which ethnic race the dead body belonged to. Then the unbelievable.... The German BKA ( Bundeskriminalamt, similar to the FBI) had also sent forensic experts, who started their job immediately. Until some weird Thais accused them of working without a work permit. Thailand said that they'd have enough of those specialists and they'd to leave the country. I'm afraid that this catastrophe had killed many people and made a lot homeless. Now it's all about surviving. I've realized that most Thais don't even know that something in the Philippines has happened. 2

watcharacters Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Yes, apparently the Democrats criticized the government saying that if the government started sending rice there could be more money going into the pockets of the corrupt (Thais not Philippines). The big 'C' word has raised it's ugly head as usual and principals go ahead of practicalities with the Democrats as usual....... . Andy you don't seem to be or sound very astute, Give the Democrat thing a rest friend, before you sound even more silly. .

Docno Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Singapore has possibly the largest concentration of billionaires in the world. It is a member of ASEAN. It has no conflicts with the Philippines. It has so far donated US$40,000. 2
donniereadit Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 World events does not seem like a priority here. Take a look at the Bangkok Post coverage and you will see what I mean. Like everything else, I guess I will have to ship in a US paper like the New York Times if I expect quality.
Showbags Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 My wifes' family are/were in the most directly hit towns Guiuan and Gen. MacArthur Eastern Samar. The photos and news clips most people see are in Tacloban which is actually a little bit "protected compared to Guiuan and Mac Arthur. Now, several days into this disaster we have heard nothing of survival of any family members. Those two towns do not really exist anymore. The US Navy carrier and another ship arrive tomorrow and things will happen. At the moment, 90% of the aid that has been sent is not being allowed into Tacloban airport as it is being used exclusively by the Philippine Air Force and their two C-130's. Complete chaos is the order of the day...New Peoples Army (communist) have attacked food convoys, people are hungry and will do anything. My wife and I will fly over early next week to sort out what we can with her family...if any survived. Word is that the Mac Arthur mayor had the high school as a shelter. It sits less than 50 meters from the open east facing sea and rumors have it that it collapsed completely as did many other "safe" shelters. Almost a week and no one has made it to Mac Arthur... Hope you get good news soon. 1

sirchai Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) Seems that more people are aware what's going on. Keep on moving. Filipinos in Germany, as well as Germans donate money. DGIE Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Unbelievable response/help/donations etc. from around the world. It is a heart-touching. Even if I am not one of the recipients. Thank you all for your kindness. We are hoping that those helps/donations will not go to the pocket of greedy crocodiles in Philippine government. We are hoping that those donations will really go to the victims of the most violent typhoon. Once more I heard the song WE ARE THE WORLD... there comes a time when we heed a certain call when the world must come together as one there are people dying it's time to lend a hand to life... It's the greatest gift of all.... 1
hellodolly Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 TV show tonight on channel 11. Fund raising for PI. PM will announce what (money and food/equipment) and who they will send. Some how that is not to reassuring to me. Not that we should consider money in a situation like this but I do wonder how much they will set aside for the Philippines and how much will get there.
Popular Post DGIE Posted November 13, 2013 Popular Post Posted November 13, 2013 There are many millionaire if not billionaire crocodiles in the senate and house of representatives in the Philippines. they should be the first to have donated to their fellow Filipinos. They are there and don't fly from far countries. 3
hellodolly Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I read somewhere China sent 100k gbp to help, whilst uk as usual donates millions. Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand China's donation amount has already hit the newswires: http://world.time.com/2013/11/13/china-to-philippines-here-have-a-measly-100000-in-aid/ With all due respect it is not any of are business what China sends. Why don't you people pick on New Zealand. We live in Thailand and one way or another donate money into the coffers here in Thailand. Not only that but China and the Philippines are not exactly on good speaking terms. My wifes' family are/were in the most directly hit towns Guiuan and Gen. MacArthur Eastern Samar. The photos and news clips most people see are in Tacloban which is actually a little bit "protected compared to Guiuan and Mac Arthur. Now, several days into this disaster we have heard nothing of survival of any family members. Those two towns do not really exist anymore. I wish you all the luck in the world from the little I know it is a disaster if gigantic proportions with thousands of deaths. Like another pointed out and you have reaffirmed the infrastructure is not capable of dealing with the amount of help they need. Hopefully the Americans will have lots of helicopters. From what i have heard an aircraft carrier is capable of producing thousands of gallons of fresh water a day. It was sickening to read about the terrorist armies attacking food convoys. I hope the U S helicopters are armed and allowed to intervene when they see some thing like that happening. Yes, apparently the Democrats criticized the government saying that if the government started sending rice there could be more money going into the pockets of the corrupt (Thais not Philippines). The big 'C' word has raised it's ugly head as usual and principals go ahead of practicalities with the Democrats as usual....... Such a typical red shirt reply to human life's being lost. Make it into a political thing. Accept the reality the country does not want your lecherous leader back free and clear of all charges. Try to do some thing positive for a change. I know that go's against every thing the red shirts stand for. Sorry to have bothered you Go back to your gainfully employed job of supporting the government no matter what they do. I here Thaksin's check book is open again. 1
lostinisaan Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 What can Thailand donate? ... Hubs! And Yingluck! Yingluck might have more shoes than Imelda Marcos ever had. Maybe an auction for foolish foot fetishists?
