Hello, I will soon need to renew my daughters UK passport.

We are both in Thailand so I will have to renew via Hong Kong

This if from the c2 notes.

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED WITH A

PASSPORT RENEWAL

 Passport Fee

 Two Identity and Passport Service standard

photographs (1 countersigned if child is under

12)

 C2 form (countersigned if child is under 12)  Current passport

I understand that we (non Thai) have to have our passports with us while we are actually in Thailand.

Will sending a copy of the details suffice?

PS: I did ask this via email to the British Embassy both in Bangkok and Hong Kong.

They seem to believe that looking after the interest of their countries citizens is just not bothering to reply.

Not one to stick up for the British Embassy, and out of courtesy they should have responded to your emailed question, but via their website it does say that you only send a copy of the bio page when applying from Thailand, adding that this is an exception to rule.

Others have already advised but I comment to give you peace of mind.

This from page you will get to if you start on this page and go through the steps.https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

Send a photocopy of the pages of your existing passport that show your personal details, photograph and residence permit or visa.Keep your existing passport for security and ID purposes - don’t send it with your application. This is an exception to the information in the main guidance notes.

I would also suggest that along with the bio page that you include a copy of the current visa status of your child. Send by courier and expect around 4 to five weeks for return.

You don't need to send your passports only your daughters last one which will also be returned to you and shown now as invalid. You can also download from the UK Passport website a debit/visa card authorisation form for the payment. Print and include. I submitted my daughters application to Hong Kong recently and it arrived from the UK (yes, UK not Hong Kong?) about three weeks later with no problem. For some reason the old one arrived in another envelope about a week later. From memory you I don't know if you need any photocopies from your passports as all the relevant details are on the form but I could be wrong.

Nope, don't send any passports, see previous posts.

Sorry, but I am trying to understand this whole thing. This is something that I have never heard before and only asking because it is interesting as a piece of information to have if ever it comes up in a conversation or an article I write.

  • Having to send renewal of a passport through Hong Kong is beyond illogical.
  • I have renewed my US passport while here LOS through the US embassy in BKK (yes afterwards going through the headache of getting the Thia stuff transferred).
  • I got my new passport in a week (there was a weekend sort of in the middle of the timeline).
  • Does the UK embassy in BKK not have a supply of blank passports that they can use or is it the usual 'get citizens to jump through as many hoops as possible' game they seem to like to play?

I have my Indefinite Leave To Remain Visa, took the 'Being British Test' (which was a joke... I gave a sample test to my local on quiz night and no one managed to get the questions right... and they were all British through and through), and jumped through enough hoops and paid a good deal of money for a variety of different things to get that far not to mention the Self Assessment notices for taxes.

Why make everything so much more difficult than it has to be and life in general already is? Sounds to me like it is so more officials can be on the payroll... sort of like here in LOS.

Maybe someone could fill me in on this one. I find it interesting for an article and as a writer I am always on the look out for a good topic. Nothing at all against the UK understand... trying to learn.

The US embassy has not produced passports for many years. They are done in the states and sent to the embassy by courier. The applications are submitted via their internal network which is why you get the new passport back so quick.

There are now very few if any embassies producing passports themselves now.

Not even HKG has a supply of blank passports, they check the application and then almost just hit a button which commences the printing and dispatch process in The UK.

As has been pointed out there are plans afoot to enable somebody overseas to order a renewal passport online, it will be interesting to see if they still impose a surcharge for somebody hitting the button in HKG.
