Hi.

Just a bit of our history, Me and my wife used to live in Thailand in Ubonratchatani we ran a minimart for a couple of years in a very poor area. When my wife became pregnant with our first child that changed our needs somewhat so I took the family back to Blighty (UK) we now have a second child and have decided it's high time we came to visit 'coon yai' Excuse my spelling! in Buriram.

So in April next year we are coming back to Thailand for 30 days, most of that will be spent with Granny, however we will spend a bit of time travelling. Now it is our retirement plan to comeback to Thailand in 20 or so years, and based so far on some of your stunning pictures of Chiang Rai and the surrounding areas I am opting to settle here.

With that long term goal in mind, next April we would very much like to spend a few days up here seeing what there is to see, so I thought I would ask the people that live here what would they recommend to see, and additionally where is your favourite area of the province.

So far the only thing on the list is the white temple.

Don't necessarily want to spend all of our time visiting tourist hot spots, we would like to get a true feel for the place as I am well aware of the rose tinted effect.

My advice would be to just enjoy visiting Thailand and not spend too much time worrying about what you may or may not do in twenty years time. You wouldn’t believe the changes I have seen since 1975 and no one knows what this place will look like in another twenty years.

Pretty much anything worth seeing gets visited by a few tourists so don’t let that stop you getting out and about.

For a few days just pick up a guide book, or read something on the Internet like VillageFarang posted and pick out a couple of places like the White Temple and the Golden Triangle.

All of us that live here have our favourite spots we go back to but often these just involve a quiet scenario with a little good food and an atmosphere that personally appeals.

See the big name tourist stuff first, you have another 20 years to find your own special places.
