BANGKOK: -- Social Development and Human Security Minister Pavena Hongsakul has urged all Thais to join "International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women", when it is celebrated - on November 25.

In the weekly TV broadcast "Yingluck Government Meets the Public", she said that data from the ministry's hotline centre showed that most complaints reported involved human trafficking. During July 11 to November 13, the centre received over 10,000 complaints, including 900 involving domestic violence.

Today, a campaign will be launched at Thupatemee Stadium in Bangkok, chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, and aimed at raising awareness of violence against women in Thai society. Another big event will follow on November 25, the globally celebrated international day, as designated by the United Nations General Assembly.

"We call for the elimination of violence to women 365 days of the year. Everyone must respect each other," Pavena said.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women recognises that women around the world are regularly the victims of rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence. The day also highlights that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden from society.

Asked if "whistle blowing" - a strategy of anti-government protesters - was a form of violence, Pavena said yes, but noted that political protests were allowed, people should have respect for others. "Still, they can do what they want, as even Lord Buddha had to fight evil," she said, before saying that whistle blowing was "bad manners", and that people should behave in a way that encourages peace

Is she for real?

Was the proposal of the controversial amnesty bill a form of social violence?

Govt campaigns for no violence against children and women for 365 days

BANGKOK, 16 November 2013 (NNT) – The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (M-Society) has launched a campaign to stop all violence against children and women for 365 days.

During the Yingluck Meets the People Program, Social Development and Human Security Minister Paveena Hongsakul said the “People’s Voice” campaign, which is scheduled on November 17th, will raise awareness about the violence against women and children. The event will include cutting of white ribbon.

According to Ms Paveena, the One Stop Crisis Center (OSCC) has so far received over 10,000 complaints relating to violence against children and women. Over 900 of complaints were resulted from domestic problems. The M-Society has been working with other agencies to give assistance to domestic victims.

Ms Paveena added the campaign will not only be emphasized only in November, but said the ministry aimed to stop any form of violence for the entire year.

I like how she supported the witch that had her son in law killed. Sure he was a bastard, but the law is the law and legal means should have been used. People can't be killing other people and just getting away with it. Who knows if that was the only reason she had him killed. And Pavena cuddling poor mother in law, the victim. crazy.gif

Paverna should also hold an international day for the elimination of self mutilation by cosmetic surgery. Pavern has so much Botox in her face she cant smile and her face lift and nose job gives her an "off my face" look.

Madame Paveena might like to take a look at Thai soaps on every evening. Men seen slapping women about constantly while anyone smoking a cigarette is pixelated out, Got a gun? No problem.

Hit the nail on the head.

The findings of an ABAC survey back in 08 as reported in The Nation & Post were most disturbing...the results include girls.

Children enjoy sexual assault scenes on TVs: survey, The Nation, 29/04/08

A recent survey has revealed shocking findings: many children enjoy watching scenes of rapes on TV and they come to see sexual assaults as something common. "Some children even say they want to be like leading male characters in TV series so that they can rape a woman," Dr Noppadon Kannika said Tuesday as the head of the Assumption University's research centre, "This is worrying".

Conducted from April 24 to April 27, the survey covered 2,159 respondents in Bangkok and major cities. The respondent age starts from two years old up.

According to the survey, raping scenes are the favourite among 21.1 per cent of children aged between 13 and 19 years old, 10.3 per cent of children aged between two and six years old and 6.4 per cent of those aged from seven to 12 years old.

Khun Paveena, if whistle blowing is bad manners, what is corruption? Is that not stealing from Thai people? Tax money should benefit all This, not only a few. So what is corruption?

No, no. the man to woman is violence, and the woman to the man is just the kind of abuse that the whole thing stinks of, no matter how violent assassinations are. Lord only knows what a mother-in-law

in capable of as long as never seen pulling the trigger.

Don't be too critical. At least this is a start. For sure Thailand has a long long way to go before there is any sense of equality between men and women. But as women here become better educated, which they are - fast, they will start to earn more money, and gain more power. Thailand's democracy and values are not western, and we can only hope for a gradual evolution towards equality. As Thai women start to travel more, they will understand more. But Thai men will certainly not change easily. One of our (western) most sacred values is preservation of life. Thais don't share this one. Many things follow including attitudes to women, poverty, disability, animals etc. Survival of the strongest is still the norm. The more publicity about the violence towards the better, even if it is a bit naive. I've witnessed a few physical assaults on women, and its been very hard to walk away.

Only 3 words are needed - Politician, Headline, Meaningless

Hello NongKaiKid; You misjudge Minister Povena terribly. She is highly committed to her profession and gets involved in issues that are vital to women throughout Thailand.

Sometimes Khun Povena gets involved in resolving individual cases of abuse against women. She does this to the point that she will on occasion travel to an abused woman's home to rescue her from imminent danger personally.

Khun Povena is not a joke.

Minister Povena is one of Thailand's finest by her example, not by her position in government.

Whilst we foreigners meet many Thai that disappoint us it is important to remember that the Thai that focus directly upon us often have little or nothing in common with the majority of the Thai people.

I rarely agree with your posts, but you are right on with this one. The lady is nothing if not a crusader for women's rights and abuse The photo of her on the lead article is probably taken in her office since the background photo looks suspiciously like the Burmese girl cruelly burned in Kamphaeng Phet some time back by her evil masters. Wonder whatever came of that?

I may not agree with Paveena's politics but she deserves respect for what she does, even if she has to suck up to Y.S..

At least she raises some kind of awareness for the issues.

It is not her fault (alone), that no one gives a hoot!

Oddly enough, for those who haven't either experienced or researched into the causes of domestic violence, it's not about equality, the battle of the sexes, stupid women, etc, it's about dominance and control. In America, psychologists and counselors began to research the issue some 20 years ago, and the resulting publications were a light in the darkness for sufferers, most of whom were women.

The focus was on helping victims of physical and verbal abuse to understand that it wasn't their fault, and that their abusive partners were not about or even able to change no matter what. The intended result of both kinds of abuse in the victim is a total loss of self-esteem and confidence and, in many cases, the loss of friends and family as the victim is too ashamed to ask for help.

The result for many victims who've lived for years with abuse is that the development of long-term post traumatic shock disorder. Of course, the issue is far more complicated than just the above and abusers are made, not born, but any ministry anywhere in the world suggesting 'let's eliminate violence against women for 365 days' won't get much of a result, if any.

The abuser's strongest weapon is denial - until denial is no longer an issue, the abuse will not stop.

A bit of a red herring this violence against women campaign that governments and the UN champion around the world. Men are statistically

far, far, more likely to experience violence. From school bullies to gang aggression, to hazing and barroom brawls. If physical abuse is

learnt partially from life experience would we not get better results from focusing on ending violence against men or against violence period.

Focusing on violence against women makes other types of violence more acceptable. Just my opinion.

...and except for the barroom- part...which part do women NOT experience...plus being married to a violent pr1ck, in countries, where women are second class human beings!?

These BS articles, which explain the utter BS tripe that come from the mouths of the BS'ers, are about as nauseating as the frequent BS articles about the BS woes of Thailand's BS education system and the BS students.

It is like an annoying spam SMS, spam email or even a bad case of herpes. They just keep coming back and annoying people with their viral tripe whilst ignoring everything going on around them.

OK. I get it! You are going to do something that you have been telling me you will do something about for the last decade or so. So shut the f&^k up and do something already.

I hear and read these articles that reportedly come from the gods up on high, but when I look around at the peons living down here in the muck, I see absolutely no evidence or means of succor for the very victims who are described as an afterthought, merely to fund the god's agenda.

Or, maybe there is not really violence against women on a scale that these people see in their view? Maybe this is simply another imagined standard which is used to fund a market so that Hi-Sos can make a living without ever doing what they say they will do?

Maybe this is a case where the victims being described are like every other problem in Thailand, which creates every kind of existing problem in Thailand: the roads, the education system, the soi dogs, the corrupt police, the corrupt politicians, the love-hate relationship they all have with life and death, and so on and so on.

Maybe it is all intrinsically interwoven into such a fine fabric of lunacy that to fix one problem would unravel all the others and the whole fabric would dissolve and their would be even more chaos.

Maybe these women don't want help. Maybe they do, but the consequences are too horrible to imagine and so they really don't want this.

Why does the battered woman defend her beater? Why does the battered woman go back to the same mess? Why are some battered women able to be helped and they go on to a better life, but the majority never do?

Why is this culture and society cranking out more violence against women, at a rate faster than these worthless do-gooders can write amazing speeches about and yet subsequently still do nothing about, and no one protests?

Where are the battered women in Thailand protesting? Have we had any protests at parliament? Have there been any 100,000 women marches on Parliament by women who are tired of being battered and being subject to violence?

I am certain there are reasons for this, but why don't we have any reasons for this?

This snobby, cavalier attitude from these "women's rights" organizations and their clear ineffectiveness to deal with the problem at a grass roots level, as well as the apathy of the "victims" who never seem to come forward or even to organize and do something about it, reminds me of the attitude that Thais have about soi dogs and every other problem that afflicts these people.

Moreover, all they do about it is bitch and complain but nothing ever really seems to get accomplished toward the goals of what these do-gooders intend or complain about. One thing for sure, there is certainly a lot of money exchanging hands over a problem that they try to convince us exists, yet never seems to go away.

It's all F.U.B.A.R. and I simply have lost all sympathy towards these organizations and what they say they are all about. No one complains. No one organizes at a grass roots level. No one does anything about it except for the random and often times violent articles of wives. mistresses or girlfriends who only seem to get really upset when another women is involved, but rarely when they are the ones being bashed and battered by some scum bag ape.

I think this is a problem that only the foreigners point out, and that the Thais awaken to when the foreigners point out, and instead of providing a solution, they turn into a money making, cottage industry simply to line their pocket books. At the other end of the spectrum, this so-called violence never seems to be addressed by the "victims" at such a scale that we can say with conviction, "Wow, these women are really fed-up and they really aren't going to take it anymore".

I am just not seeing it.
