so he did report where he stayed

Why report where he stayed? Was he here to stay for a long period? How did the shop employee find info to search his name?

Yes, most unlikely that a shop employee of a pharamacy would go to the trouble of checking a customers details on the internet. Something does not sound correct with that story - much more to be told in that news story.

Of course there are sexually depraved men everywhere, but can anyone enlighten me as to why most appear to be in the west, judging by the news. Here is another example: http://news.sky.com/story/1163814/child-sex-sting-sees-110-brits-caught-online

Because you are looking at Western news sources...

And this is why Thai people have every reason to be vigilant about Farang men. It is an undeniable fact. It is going to be an insurmountable task for Farangs to change the way Thais view them.

I am a Western man and I know that none of my Thai friends or associates believe this of me. Naturally you are free to believe what you want and I am free to just carry on with my life not giving a sh1t about your opinions. A quick look on your profile shows that you have come here JUST to assault Farang. Sounds to me like the actions of a sad, lonely, man....bit like Mr Wayne here.

If you were indifferent to my opinions, why did you feel the need to respond? This kind of story is ubiquitous.

Simply put you just cannot come up with anything decent to counter my argument? What does my avatar have to do with morals? Methinks he doth protest too much.

To get you started

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/thailand/10130437/Buddhist-monks-arrested-over-Thai-child-sex-abuse-claims.html

This one is interesting

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18843879

About 77% were abused by family members.

This one is simply damning

http://www.seameo.org/vl../child/text1.htm

In short, don't spout spurious information as fact. Yes there are foreigners that come here and behave appallingly however in most of those stories there is a Thai family standing in the background clutching the money they received for that access. It is, as the last report iterates, hard to get quality data on this subject due to short-comings in the Thai police, political and legal systems.

Now to defend, because it was never my intention to attack just get rid of unqualified statements, there is sexual abuse of minors all over the world. Every society has this and uncovers it at all levels. Unfortunately Thailand appears to want to do nothing about it.

If you think I can't come up with anything decent in future please do the smallest amount of research on the subject. Sure the "western" man on holiday gets a lot of press, but the actual reason for that is that we don't want our people going around the world behaving this way. In Thailand it is all about brushing it under the carpet and using tight media controls to suppress.

---EDIT---

Just adding another for you

http://www.humanium.org/en/thailand/

Many children in Thailand are victims of physical or sexual violence or abuse. Many of these cases are never reported as the children are afraid of reprisals and they still do not have access to the infrastructures to help them report this kind of violence.

Generally speaking, these children are victims of abuse within the family or at school.

Most instances of sexual violence are against young girls, which has a serious impact on their lives. They are vulnerable and do not dare to talk about the trauma they have been through. Also, some of them fall pregnant as a result of this sexual abuse, which turns their lives upside down.

There are some organisations providing social services which welcome and support these children. However Thailand must do more to protect them.

All I did was search "Child Abuse Thailand" and these were all page 1 on google.

As I said in one of my earlier comments: there are sexually depraved men everywhere. Yet, judging by what frequently appears on the news, whether in the western media or Thai press, there seems to be a multitude of stories regarding Caucasian men and their sexual depravity. That many sexually deviant Farangs come to Thailand and abuse minors is not spurious, it is a fact. Some even pretend to be teachers such as this guy: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/437942-canadian-christopher-paul-neil-mr-swirl-get-reduced-jail-term-in-bangkok/

I am very surprised that you still have difficulty understanding why Thais are wary of Farang men. And you should not feel the need to defend yourself if you have done nothing wrong.

How are these statistics about child abuse in Thailand verifiable if no action is taken against the perpetrators? If Thailand did not want to do anything about this problem and wanted to brush it under the carpet, there would not be frequent stories on the news about Farang sexual predators being arrested in this country.

In comparison with other countries, in my view, Thailand is relatively safe for kids to play outside, unlike some countries in the west where parents paedophile fears restrict their children from doing so: http://www.cypnow.co.uk/cyp/news/1078011/parents-paedophile-fears-stop-children-playing-outside In the UK, parents have even been banned from attending their kids school sports day because of paedophile fears: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/5732821/Parents-banned-from-sports-day-over-paedophile-fears.html I have not yet come across this kind of story in Thailand. Then again you cannot blame people in the west for being overly cautious when there are plenty of weirdoes who want to do horrible things to kids. http://news.sky.com/story/1140489/geoffrey-portway-inside-paedophiles-dungeon

Interestingly I agree with you on so much of this last post. However you have also changed your tone quite considerably. At first you simply came on here and told us all that ALL foreign men are viewed as evil sexual predators by ALL Thai people. That is what I wanted to correct.

I can not agree more about the safety aspect of Thailand and children playing outside. Certainly my country has over-reacted over the this issue of safety and playing outside. The truth is that the statistics for child abuse in the UK probably play out quite similarly (around 80% are family members or people very close to the family) as well.

What I can't agree on is your belief that these statistics shouldn't be trusted. The people gathering those statistics know so much more than either of us because they are seeing the results of these problems every day. For your statement to be true about "All Thai people thinking all foreign men are sexual predators" (sorry for the lack of the direct quote...we lost that quite a while back in our debate) would mean that there is a HUGE amount of hypocrisy. This is insulting to my Thai friends, the people who's side you are "apparently" taking.

Please can you understand that the reason you are not hearing as much about these Thai abuse cases is that Thai people tend to blend in around here whilst us foreigners tend to stick out (you know, big noses and all that). If there was an effective police force (this article contains one of the VERY few pieces of evidence of the Thai police actually doing a reasonable job) in this country you WOULD be seeing more evidence to back up the research that I have quoted.

OK, we can disagree on these small points for a long time to come but I think we see that we agree on the fundamental principle that sexual predators are bad and that they come from ALL walks of life. I would like to offer you some advice. Your avatar is only going to cause a problem round here. If you continue to use it you will find that you put people's backs up. If you continue to use it we are going to note you as an horrendous, ignorant, racist who is in support of genocide, child mutilation, medical experimentation for pleasure and a much wider array of disgusting activities. Please consider changing this if you wish to come here and provide a Thai point of view using your, by local standards, exceptional control of the English language.

Looking forward to your reply.

Good thing that the Thai police followed up on an international request. Really positive development.

Putting things in perspective (not condoning....in the slightest) 13 is the legal age in a surprising amount of countries in the world (just not the States or Thailand). Chile (and a few others) have it set at 12!!!!

From my own perspective I feel that the staggered model (16 but 14 for under 18s (i.e. if you are 14 and your partner is 16 then that is fine)) is the most respectful, supportive and mature.

Yeah. Now, if they put as much effort into bringing to book their domestic criminality, that'd be a really really positive development dry.png
