DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA (BNO NEWS) -- North Carolina Central University (NCCU) on Thursday afternoon issued a lockdown for its facilities, warning that a "possible" active shooter was on campus, officials said. It was not immediately clear if shots had been fired.

"The NCCU campus is on lockdown. Please stay away from all windows and doors. There is a possible active shooter on campus," the university said in a warning to students at 2:39 p.m. local time. It issued a second alert minutes later, advising that lockdown was still in effect.

NCCU is located in Durham, the fourth-largest city in North Carolina.
