webfact
Syrian arrested in Phuket over 'smuggled' hookahsEakkapop ThongtubPHUKET: -- Syrian hookah owner Abdullaman Saloom, 20, was arrested at 10pm yesterday (November 21) in a raid at a prominent Arabic restaurant in Patong. The raid to arrest Mr Saloom at the Orient Restaurant on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd was initiated by the new Kathu District Chief, Sayan Chanachaiyawong, backed by Kathu Police and local security volunteers.Mr Saloom was arrested on a charge of smuggling 31 hookahs, or shishas, into the country, along with 1.6 kilos of shisha tobacco from Egypt. He was taken to Kathu Police Station where he was also charged with working without a work permit.Hookahs are unpopular with Thai authorities because they are often smoked by students who are too young to buy cigarettes legally, and a number of hookah parlours in Phuket have been closed in recent years.Source: http://www.thephuketnews.com/syrian-arrested-in-phuket-over-%E2%80%98smuggled%E2%80%99-hookahs-42987.php-- Phuket News 2013-11-

steelepulse
What's the duty on legal hookahs? Seriously it can't be that much, but I'm sure new charges would be found against dek Saloom for something else.

The Arab restaurants in the sois behind Nana plaza are full of them (hookahs not hookers...well both but the topic on hand is hookahs) and are are openly displayed and used for all to see???
