Lampang City halts activities at movie set that burned down on Wednesday

LAMPANG, 23 November 2013 (NNT) – Lampang City authorities have ordered a suspension of activities at a 3-storey shop house that was engulfed in flames while being used as a movie set for a Hollywood film, after finding that the structure had been compromised.

Lampang City Mayor Kittiphum Namwong revealed that officials have reported the results of their investigation of the shop house in Soptui sub-district, Lampang City, which was conducted after Wednesday's fire.

Mr. Kittiphum said engineers from the municipality will conduct a thorough inspection of the damages to the building, which was built more than 30 years ago. He said officials will also consider the fact that the structure was in the middle of a densely populated area. He added the police were still carrying out their investigation into the cause of the fire.

The building was being used as a set for the Hollywood film "The Coup", which stars Pierce Brosnan and Owen Wilson.

Good work by the Lampang authorities in assessing that the structure of a 30 year old three storey Thai building that was engulfed in flames has been compromised.

Plod should give them a call.

I'd start looking at the wiring the electrician did 30 years ago. It's most likely up to the same as todays standards.blink.png

Yep and ol' Owen wasted no time hitting Loi Kroh either. Seems like a fun guy

"We had finished filming after the explosion scene," he said. "As the crew was packing and moving things downstairs somebody saw the fire on the third floor of the building."

Police Col. Thanakorn Khumwong said investigators suspect the high voltage required by the special effects caused an electrical short circuit that caused the fire.

Thai PBS television station showed footage of flames shooting from an upper window of the building as firefighters on the sidewalk worked to extinguish them Wednesday evening.

Mr Korrawuth said that a new location would be found for filming the remainder of the explosion scene due to extensive fire and water damage to the set.
