Some bad news: Tops Daily in Jomtien is gone!

I stopped in at Tops Daily early this morning (across from the Jomtien Complex and next to La Bocca) to do a little shopping and all seemed normal.

Sometime after that, however, they disappeared and the place is now a FamilyMart! This is very disappointing as FamilyMart prices are much higher and they don't carry the same things. Plus, there is already a FamilyMart a half block away and we certainly don't need another one!

Someday we'll have a real supermarket (Tops, Foodland, Best, Villa, BIG C, Lotus) to serve the almost 10,000 condominiums at View Talay 2, View Talay 5, View Talay 7, Jomtien Plaza, Jomtien Complex...

Luckily the FoodMart is getting better all the time. The prices are much more reasonable than they used to be and they seem to be stocking more items. But it is still not a full-fledged supermarket.

Wow in just in a matter of hours a change from Tops Daily to Family Mart.

Just 1 question, did this include all the signage or did you maybe walk in the wrong store ? thumbsup.gif

Central group which owns Tops recently bought Family Mart, so they made a very poor decision to change the Tops Daily to Family Mart. Not a good idea. The clerks in Family Marts are surly and indifferent and Family Mart does not stock many items that were available in Tops Daily. So now I hike to Food Mart to shop.

Definitely lost my business and that of many farang friend in the area.

I stopped by Tops in the late afternoon (what I thought was Tops) to get a few items and noticed things had changed as none of the items I wanted was available. Then I realized I was in a Family Mart. Good grief not another one, I jumped in my car and drove to Tesco to do my shopping. Yes, this area could easily support a real supermarket.

I'm a bit surprised that there still isn't a mini Tesco or mini BigC in Jomtien within walking distance of the View Talay/Hanuman monument/Jomtien Complex area. Either of them would wipe the floor with the omnipresent and overpriced 7/11s and Family Marts.

Why cant they just build a Big C in this area and all our problems will be solved.

I don't think it's going to happen...

If I recall, about 5-7 years ago, a large number of owners of mom & pop mini-marts were complaining to the Thai government that the rapid construction of big stores like: Big-C, Tesco/Lotus, and Carrefour; were financially hurting them. Even though the mom and pop mini-marts bought their stocks from from the big stores much cheaper than from their suppliers. The Thai government threatened the foreign-backed big stores not to build anymore big stores or they wouldn't be able to operate in Thailand. Since then... Carrefour bailed out of Thailand, selling their assets to Big-C. And there have been a proliferation of mini stores like: Big-C, Tesco/Lotus, Family Mart, and 7/11, which are now forcing the mom & pop mini-marts out of business!

Rather ironic isn't it???

Simple Thai Business Logic 101...

With a big Tesco and a big BigC and a Makro just a short drive/bahtbus trip up Thepprasit this seems unlikely. And land is too expensive near the beach anyway.

About the only way you are likely to see a really big supermarket in that area would be as part of a mall/entertainment complex like Central.

But a mini BigC or mini Tesco would be practical and would break the 7/11 Family Mart monopoly.

The big stores are a poison.

They work ok on the good side of things as long as the sales of any big shop brand does not make up more than 25 or 30% of total sales of a producer/manufacturer. If that threshold is reached, the shops then proceed to strangle the producing industries.

I sent an email to Foodland earlier in the week, asking them if they were really building a facility in Jomtien. They answered today and I'm sorry to report that their reply was neither positive nor definitive.

Here it is:

Dear Mr. Richard,

We thank you for your support!! The plan for Jomtien Pattaya still not
confirmed. We will annouce through our Central Pattaya store if the plan is
set.

Thank you for shopping with Foodland Supermarket.

Best Regards,
Raviporn T.

Are you really sure it is a Foodland by the Royal Hill, Chris? That would be good news indeed!

Well that was what the taxi drivers sat outside the site said but i guess we will have to wait to be sure.

Foodland, Carribbean...same same but diffreent.
