Thailand slips in global corruption survey

I'm still of the opinion that the average expat has no real conception of the extent of corruption in Thailand. They tend to think it is the police and their 200 baht and Thaksin and phone companies - they don't seem to realise how it touches and feats and taints every person who lives in this country, citizen or not.

Headline on Email should read "MORE rampant than ever."

Then there is this: http://the-japan-news.com/news/article/0000842662

Thailand had better wake up and smell the coffee. Foreign direct investment will start to wane if the instability continues and when that goes away this country will have a hard time economically as it has no domestic industry that it can really call its own.

Now waiting for a speech from PM Yingluck stating the improved ranking was a result of all the hard work she and her government had put into corruption rolleyes.gif

It would seem the percentage of skimming = the percentage of transparency 30-35%! Possibly whistling.gif

On looking at the graph showing the relative position Of LOS (LOC) over the years, would anyone like to speculate whether there is an apparent correlation with a particular group controlling the purse strings?

Maybe I saw it wrong again but I thought on the graph that during Abhisits command corruption had DECREASED. was this right 2008-2010. ???

If you look carefully, it just took a breather during the upward trajectory.

Is that a bad thing ???

I usually think it can't get much worse in the area of corruption, but I suppose there is always room for deterioration.

I wonder why the US is not way up there? Here every little fart can steal, just like India etc. in the US the fraud is much bigger, but way up, all the way up

I would be interested in your reasoning on why the Democrats can not do it. So far all I hear is talk.

I was here when they were in office and know that they had way to many people to please to do the job properly. Piss one party off and they would with draw there support and it would be election time. They were not given a chance and people who don't know any thing about the government are thinking they did have a chance. If they had been able to push through bills there would be a far better Thailand today. They were not perfect but there is no such thing as a perfect party unless you count the perfectly corrupt PTP.

Would some one explain to me how a party leads a minority government depending on Thaksin trained corruption specialist and the main opposition has a military arm that they are using.

How do they do that and still do every thing perfectly for Thailand. Even against those odds they did better than the current government who needs no outside support. They have more seats than all the other parties put together. Now even a half wit would know that with that kind of support they could do great things for Thailand instead they did great things against Thailand.

Heya HelloDolly,

After many years of pondering and sharing threads with yourself I have come to realise that one party is self-serving, one party is less self serving. One party has a leader that genuinely cares, has international experience, and another does not. One has international respect, and another is tolerated by title only while her unelected relation illegitimately negotiates shady back door deals with other countries ranking low on the survey.

What needs to happen IMO is that a major shake up needs to take place, removing people who make statements such as "I would not allow my daughter to marry a Farang", and "The UN is not my father" - two statements made by the genius currently leading the protests. They may as well put a TradeMark on the statement "Mai roo" (I don't know") for the leader of the current political establishment, it has been worn out more than the bottom of an Ethiopian marathon runners shoe.

I agree with the movement, but the leader is not internationally respected and the wrong man for the job if they wish the movement to get positive press abroad. Only then will the government be forced to buckle, unless they continue gunning people down in the street and allowing their supporters to burn people alive in buses.

We don't hear much about the political issues here in the Deep South (Yala) at the moment BTW, less what we see on the news - it doesn't seem to count for much here.

If you compare with Brazil, you will feel very happy! LOL
There are no country in the world more corrupt than Brazil. Thailand just start to understand the way corruption do. Sad but true.

One day if you have a guy in your country called "LULA" it means literally squid, then you need to start worrying about. LOL

I'm part owner of a Bangkok bar. One of our monthly line-item expenditures is 6000 Baht "tea money". It used to be 5000 Baht, but inflation is rampant in the corruption business.

I read before that a survey of Thai people showed that most were ok with corruption/tea money as long as they got their share! I wonder how much of the 2 Trillion Baht loan will actually go to projects like fixing the railroad beds so the darn trains won't keep falling over on their sides.

I think corruption are all over the globe, in south America it is also rampant, in Sao Paulo it is almost impossible to avoid, I can say the same for Assuncion in Paraguay... mafia all over, with all lines of business. And I not mention Equador, Colombia.. I always have the vision that if you have more money than you can hidde more corruption, I think I till believe it. Country like US, UK, are all corrupts as Thailand, Camboja, etc.. but in another level of corruption.

I'd like to add that I don't think many Thais fully appreciate the full extent either, after all, recent surveys suggest they are ok with it.

It then ranks countries on a scale of 0-100, where 0 means a country’s public sector is considered highly corrupt and 100 means it is regarded as very clean.

Thailand is in 102. Is this not considered very clean?

Considering the majority of Thai people think corruption is alright, what else can you expect? She and this fine country are just responding to what the people want. They don't seem to be able to comprehend that corruption is a major drain on everyone and the development of this country. Too myopic, self centered and cannot see beyond today, I hate to say.

Hey guys, the score you want here is like golf, okay? Not basketball! Lower your ranking number, less corrupt according to this study.

Is this an excuse for Thai to try to beat the rest, cause they are on the way to do that.

As for the UK. how many times in my lifetime have I had to pay the police for false traffic offences. NEVER.

when every county gets allowances for road/ buildings etc., how much goes into the pocket of the council leader NONE this is at what I call ground level. At the very high level there must be favours BUT not in your face like here so your crazy comment re UK on the same level.. words now fail.

Have a re think.

We are talking about corruption here. You can't compare USA and Thailand. Yes, money can be lost due to

Mismanagement there, but not lining someone's pockets like in Thailand

You will notice how there was a slight dip while Abhisit was in charge, just saying.... This is the main problem, for 20 years the Shin regime has been about as transparent as a black hole. We need checks and balances and transparency to stop these kinds of things from happening. The government's accounts should be open and freely available for anyone who wants to to see and we should be allowed to scrutinize and ask questions when things just don't add up.

i think op was being sarcastic and also indicating that YIngluk lacked any sense of understanding of anything so as she often has would come up with normal BS with a big smile pif course. Very clever of Taksin since most only look at outside and a bit like cluso movie when his assistant was questioning the prime suspect and cluso said shut up don't you see she's sexy so can get away with anything

I may be thick, but the way i read the chart is that Thailand is worse now. So one of us has it wrong. If you look at Singapore (No 5) it says it's one of the cleanest!!!
