By Khaosod Online

BANGKOK: -- Many Thais are facing risks of unemployment due to the slowdowns in global and domestic economies, according to Deputy Director of the Centre of Economic and Business Forecast, University of Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Wachira Khoontaweethep said business firms are also facing difficulty in releasing their stocks and increasing capitals. He blamed the government′s enactment of new minimum wage rate at 300 baht per day as a factor.

Employability Confidence Index in November also remains at 68.2, the lowest in 18 months, said Mr. Wachira, adding that many people are facing employment struggles in Bangkok and its peripheral provinces, including provinces that have not been connected to logistic routes.

Meanwhile, SMEs Investment Suitability Index in November 2013 hit its lowest in 89 months at 70.4, causing SMEs to put off their investments.

It's beyond question that Thailand needs to improve its education standards, but it's also true that unemployment is not necessarily the same thing as low education. Many of the young unemployed in Europe are well qualified, while low skilled immigrants come in and take the low skilled jobs.

Figures blasted out for yonks say there is virtually no unemployment now so, when these expected ones do SIGN on they will be near the first to do so.

Before on this forum I many time spoke of the figures being wrong and there were far more unemployed than shown, but the replies got round that by saying if you get money for doing a bit of work even if it is not on any books, you are employed. BS figures. Better start to monitor people that pay money out so tax can be deducted also monies earned should be declared only then can you get stats. Where are the offices in towns for the unemployed ??? also do they pay out money,??? have they procedures to say -if you do not prove you have applied for work you are not entitled to a payment??

"Many Thais are facing risks of unemployment due to the slowdowns in global and domestic economies...

No, they are facing risk of unemployment because their (lack of) education and training does not prepare them to compete in the modern marketplace.

Once again they place the blame on everything and everyone but themselves. The mainstream Thai education system is little more than basic brainwashing, teaching students to blindly follow through memorizing patriotic songs and slogans, while ignoring teaching the skills that other nations' school systems stress in order for their students to be competitive in today's hi tech world.

Yes in a nutshell there education system is geared to growing and selling food supplies. Not much logical reasoning for that or the ability to reason.

They need to change the thrust around to subjects that allow them to compete in a Tech advancing world.

Not going to go into the qualifications needed to pass through school and get a degree.

Edit

There whole education system is as screwed up as my ability to spell. That is bad really bad.

unemployment? here in Thailand? the country where most of the jobs that no body want

are being taken by foreign workers from our neighboring countries? Thai are inherently

unskilled, lazy people, and I'm not saying that out of malice, I ought to know, I have employed

hundreds of them, with no sense of work place loyalty, and no vision for their future, there are

mostly temporary workers at best, here today, gone tomorrow,

there is much to say about this subject, the bottom line is that Thai workers are not afraid

of being unemployed, they stay and eat with friend and family for as long as it take to find

a job that they like, and that can sometime months or even longer....

What you say may well be true.

How ever it is a two sided coin. They have a sense of personnel unity that we as a rule do not even come close to approaching.

Would be nice to find a middle ground.smile.pngwai2.gif

It's a problem everywhere. there are not enough jobs for uneducated/skilled people. Will get worse.

Of course in Isaan easy for unemployed men Send daughters/wives/gf's to Pattaya to get money from sexpats/sex tourists.... hang on they already do that! (I lived in Isaan and although a stereotype it is based on reality). The sexpats will be happy more unemployment increases supply side of girls and decreases prices/more choice etc. Journalists will be "happy" as they can report more about the flesh trade. The girls won't though. A man's world is Thailand.

I do still wonder about about a Socialist Utopia where everyone does what they can for the reward of a challenge and take what they need (aka Star Trek). So no unemployment. But humans are so well basically animal really. Greedy and selfish. Maybe we need to evolve more? Genetic engineering anyone? Next stage of evolution! Or is that Fascism. I need a beer to ponder that.

There are literally jobs for millions of unskilled labour here but they are filled by Burmese and Cambodians.

There is a double edged sword to keeping wages so low so long. Companies learn not to invest in capital, so there only efficiency is people. When people get too expensive they import cheaper ones or die.

There are hundreds of massive employers in thailand who's only hope is rock bottom wages and a cheap currency. One day it will go pop and there will be millions of Cambodians in country waiting to find another job

If you spend all day for weeks on end protesting and attempting to overthrow the government, you probably don't care too much about being unemployed

Never a truer word spoken, The Thai day of judgment is fast approaching!

Yes it certainly is,and then how will they be able to pay for their nice houses and cars etc all on finance. Not wishing to be the doctor of doom, but when the pack of cards start toppling,it could be devastating, with a lot of people losing face, and we all know how much the proud Thai's love losing face, don't we?

By those who are there to "protect" the government I can only think you mean the UDD. They were in Bangkok for about 2 occasions of 2/3 days duration wasn't it, and wasn't there a weekend in there somewhere?

As usual we're getting a wee bit off topic again, but didn't the UDD / red-shirts / anti-anti-government protesters stay in the government provided stadium for a few weeks? Aren't there millions of red-shirts on standbye to protect their 'blanket amnesty' government?

No, they didn't.

Rubbish.

Every business , on every corner is screaming for staff and half of them do not ask for education.

Restaurants , hotels, shops, resorts, rental places and list goes on

Not to mention construction sites and factories.

There are by far more jobs than candidates but lazy beings do not want to work, do not want to learn and will not sacrifice an hour of their life to get ahead in life.

They just jump from job to job looking for an easy money or an easy squeeze and move on, then take a 9 months holiday waiting for hand out.
