Thailand Death Certificates Information wanted

I have been told that hospitals in Pattaya will not supply a death certificate until their bill is paid. Is that true?

Yes it is true. They will not even release a body for burn or burrial until the bill is paid. That is not just in Pattaya though, it is all over Thailand.

And why should they...st that point, it's their only leverage in getting paid.

Also, all Pattaya balloon chasers should know that a local temple cremation costs 40-50k so be sure you leave at least that much lying around unless you just want a group cremation and dumping by the roadside.

Also, if you don't die in an accident or medical setting, e.g., at home, and are sent by law to Bangkok for that police forensic autopsy, that's another 40 thousand or so.

Thanks for that.

So what happens when the bereaved has insufficient funds to pay the bill, but will eventually have enough when a Will is probated? In Thailand can a Will be probated without a death certificate? On sworn testimony of a lawyer say? In the meantime does the body stay in cold storage accumulating daily 'room' fees?

Finally can anyone get a death certificate? A long-standing Thai girlfriend for instance.

1) A will would normally be held by a lawyer and then he will still want to see the DC before hand as will anyone to do with a death.

2) The body stays in cold storage and accumulates fees.

3) It can only be family that can get a DC.

4) If you cannot pay the hospital the wont release the body OR the DC no matter what.

Maybe you can elaborate as your story seems a little fishy or something?

1) What is a "balloon chaser?

2) Group cremation and body dumped at the roadside?

3) A cremation can be done at a Wat for 20,000 THB. They body should be left for 3, 6,9 or any multiple of "3" in Thai Buddhist tradition. There are also sometimes lineups depending on the Wat. But yes if you are going to pay Thai's to stay with the body day and night and keep the candles lit etc and pay for the food, drinks etc then yes it could get up there but the actual cremation is free however it is expected to pay around 20k.

4) In case of a criminal investigation the family does NOT pay for an autopsy and the bill will be determined on the outcome of the autopsy.

Body is withheld, but not sure about the death certificate.

Mario, I speak from experience. A Death Certificate will not be issued until the bill is paid and the removal of the body has been signed for.

Some Wats in Pattaya charge only about 11,000 baht for a cremation. An undertaker in Bangkok will handle everything, including all costs involved, for approximately 35,000 baht.

Another example of Thainess ?

I don't follow? Thai and Farang is the same thing.

Nothing fishy behind this Gone. Just a question (prompted by my having had a stroke recently), for which I wanted a reply. I have received some, so thank you all. Now, I wonder what would happen if the deceased has no family or wife/husband.

Didn't mean fishy as in YOU were up to anything but you didn't provide 100% of the info so couldn't give 100% reply.

Depends if the deceased is Thai or Farang. If Farang then they would contact the embassy of the deceased and they would arrange to contact family back home and if none was found then They would cremate the deceased in Bangkok. Depending on the embassy, they might put an announcement in a local English news paper or anyone wanting to know where or when could contact that embassy.

If Thai then the local community would arrange the creamation in the local Wat that can burn them in. Anyone of course would be invited and if it an elderly that has no family then he would still be respected and have many people turn out to look after his/her body for the time needed.

I wouldn't worry about it (as you'll be dead), and I'm sure your loving partner will get a better deal on the funeral (disposal of your carcass!!!).
