My beautiful 48 year old wife was losing a lot of hair and very worried about it, handfuls of hair every day and a regularly blocked shower drain. On a recent trip to Australia we asked a hairdresser about it and she said to try Zinc. So she did and within one week the hair loss had stopped and I have rarely seen a single hair in the bathroom since.

Now it is two months later with an extraordinary difference she keeps commenting that she feels stronger and healthier than ever before.

Zinc supplements are also recommended for people with Talasemia, which is very common in Thailand.

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder. What's the connection to the shedding of hair?

My wife takes 5 mg of zinc (from zinc oxide) per day from a Blackmore's multivitamin and has done for years, yet she still sheds a fair bit of hair.

Is this zinc dose too low? If so, how much zinc would you suggest?

No connection that I know of. I was simply responding that Zinc is beneficial for other reasons, one of which is the critical balance of things you need to do for someone with Talasemia. See your doctor or better yet a hematologist for the best advice.

To be honest, I don't reckon anyone has a clue as to the optimum amounts of daily zinc.. I certainly wouldn't be asking a doctor.

Certainly zinc is important for many body functions.

According to this: http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/Zinc-Excess-and-Zinc-Toxicity.htm my wife's supplementary intake is in the recommended range and she'll be getting zinc from her food too..

We'll probably have to look elsewhere for answers, but there's probably as many theories as there are questions.

It`s normal to loose 100-150 hair a day. If you have 50 cm hair, it would look much. Thats it.

Thai girls do not loose more than others, and some of them also have very thick hairs compared

to a blond European, making it seem like more than "normal". And that black hair is easier to spot.

They shed a lot because the have a lot. But as pointed out what is truly amazing is how they know another

woman has been in the condo. No matter how you sweep and clean they always find a stray hair or two.

Usually starts, "you have other lady here after me?" No, "Who hair this" must be yours "Not my hair"

When I first met my now wife I regularly commented on the amount of hair she shed (imagine the embarrassment when the apartment cleaners came in knowing I'd had visitors).

After being in hospital for 2 weeks in our first month of courting she admitted she was recently diagnosed SLE (Lupus), an autoimmune disorder more prevalent in Asian women and which requires steroid treatment that caused the hair loss.

She cut her lifelong, bottom caressing hair down to almost a skinhead to cover up the baldness and would wake up with nightmares about her loss of hair.

She recovered well enough to cut the steroids and grow enough hair back for our wedding although suffered further substantial loss during the last year when a specialist changed her steroids in reaction to a dangerously high CK result (muscle fatigue) requiring further hospitalisation.

1 1/2 years on the CK is still very high and we have not been able to start our family planning, but a couple of corrective haircuts later she is currently sporting an even, shoulder length number and looking forward to being a long haired momma in the new year :) .

If i had to guess, i say has something to do with quality of water, shampoos used, frequency of washes and cheap chemical used to highlight the hair.

It's not just Thai females. I'm guessing that the OP had never been with a woman before he "discovered" Thailand. Fascinating creatures, them women, eh?

actually, its an indication of low iron, low B12 and low Vitamin D

(which is something VERY common in almost all countries)

but,, seeing that many Asian Women make a massive effort to keep out of the sun (resulting in Low Vitamin D)

and that most people in the world have low B12

and that many people who do not eat a balanced diet are also low on iron too!!

these things coupled together will produce a weak body.

Hair loss is a major sign of Anemia (low iron).

- B12 helps the body store iron and also produce blood cells and blood plasma (along with tonnes of other bodily functions)... so B12 is an important role in KEEPING the iron inside your body.

The vitamin D from the sun is not a major risk of loosing hair... but its a vitamin that many lack.

if you ever meet a real anemic person who has very low iron, they will be loosing hair like anything!!

- but more importantly, they are putting themselves at a much higher risk for heart problems!!

get her iron and folate levels tested... and get her to eat her green veggies. if she doesnt like veggies, then i'm sorry I feel sorry for her.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've worked on hair care brands in Thailand, and in the vast majority of cases hair fall is due to hair breakage (not falling out from the roots). This is the result of everyday damage from styling; brushing wet hair causes more damaging than chemical rebonding.

edit: grammar

My gf was losing a ton. Took her to Bumrumgrad, gave her a complete check up, and they gave her Rogaine. Not anemic + I give her a B multivitamin. She eats a lot of veggies, fruits, seafood, & meats. She's not afraid of the sun. Uses mild expensive shampoos. She's still using a ton. Guess I'll give the Zinc a shot.

Since i been here in Thailand, i started to notice many young woman losing their hair and i assumed that it could be because many can not afford bottled water and or drink tap water in combination by eating fish that maybe contaminated by the farm chemicals contaminating the rivers and thus the food supply. later after i got married and now have a Thai wife, I have also noticed that started losing hand full of hair everytime she took a shower or comb her hair, we even had her take hair loss sessions and it has only slowed it down, but still falling off. We will try having her take the Zinc and see if this works.

As has been said, Thai women do not lose hair anymore than other women (you don't see may walking about with bald spots, do you?).

It is just that their hair, being comparatively coarse and black in color, is a lot more noticeable when shed than the hair of western women..

Great topic thought about that myself many times,,, Mongolian, Chinese Filipino woman are all the same with the Filipino woman number one for hair loss in my opinion Im sure its the same for all Asian woman

maybe something to do with all the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin the yanks dropped in Vietnam back in the day...

I was thinking the very same thing. I am confident that if you looked in a microscope or found a scientific study that the density of hair follicles on asians is higher than caucasians and possibly similar to dark africans. THis phenomenon of pore density can be also seen on the stomata of many plants.

BUT: I did a quick websearch on the subject and I was wrong. This is a quote from a hairloss website:

Asian Hair Loss Considerations

Asian people typically have very straight hair. Their scalps contain fewer hairs per square centimeter, they actually have a lower hair density than that of Caucasian hair follicles. But because the individual hair follicles of East Asians are thicker, this gives the look and impression of greater hair density.

- See more at: http://www.hairlosslearningcenter.org/causes-of-hair-loss/causes-of-hair-loss.asp#sthash.kMFwoKzo.dpuf

If Thai women or men lose hair, it may not be just from lack of zinc or a thyroid problem. There often can exist a scalp fungus which can affect the hair-loss rates as well.

Genetic hair loss is not common in Asians less than 90 years old, and if a zinc supplement doesn't help than I would find one of these local Thai herbal hair treatments. They can be very effective. But if you are a male caucasian and your mother's brothers and/or father have lost hair with age then it is probably genetic and don't waste your money.

IF you suffer from genetic hair loss, then your only solution is either acceptance, hair implants, or a wig... I personally like wigs because you get a variety of hairstyle options at a lower price. IF the girls is shocked when you take it off, then just laugh and let her know you are an entertainer. IF she can't handle the idea then she has no sense of humor and qualifies as a one night stand to be forgotten asap....

This is sensible advice re getting Iron level tested- The blood test is called Ferritin.

Hair loss can affect ones confidence and its prudent to get blood tests done to ascertain what the cause it to thus prevent further loss.

I would recommend the following tests be done:

- Full blood count

- Comprehensive Thyroid TSH etc

- Ferritin

- Progesterone ovarian function hormone test

- Estrogen

Hair loss can be caused by a number of issues- including genetics, medication, stress or hormonal issue.

Your best to go to a private hospital and pay as the govt hospitals will not treat this as a serious matter.

cheers

Yes!! completely agree (with WYM) !! please let us know about he meeting with the parents!!

PS:: also: yes I agree that the above tests could help detect the underlying problem...

but I cant stress enough the importance of B12 (which works together with iron).. Low B12 is a MAJOR cause of having low iron storage.. and low iron storage (Anemia) results in Hair Loss.

If he doesnt wanna do the blood tests,, then just be bold and assume that she has Low B12 and Possibly low iron... along with lack of a healthy enough diet.

B12 tablets cant do any harm. you cant overdose on them

iron, however is NOT a tablet that you wanna play around with too much!! synthetic iron (and meat-based, animal iron) are not dealt with very well by the body. it cant shed the excess too well. and if you raise iron too high you really put the heart at risk.

so,, if you are NOT monitoring her iron levels, then just give her loads of dark green leaf vegetables... (with lemon juice, to enhance the iron absorption).

parsley is very high in iron... which means a parsley salad with lemon is GREAT !!!!!

and if you want know.. there is a Lebanese dish called Tabbouleh. EVERY SINGLE ARABIC or LEBANESE RESTAURANT WILL HAVE IT. its mega tasty ;)

PS: vegetable iron does not have any problems with gteh body... it does not build up and cause any heart problems.. so you can never have too much vegetable or plant based iron.

just dont feed her liver and iron pills!!! because that could be risking danger (if you are not monitoring her blood iron levels).
