Beetle like Creatures.

Featured Replies

They are about 2ins long, black, and always seem to lie on their backs with their paws wriggling as if they cannot get back on their feet. They are obviously harmless as my BIL can pick them up. I have lived in the same house since I moved to Thailand eight years ago, and it is only recently I first saw them, they are there nearly every day. Has anyone seen these things or know what they are, and why you never see them walking, but always on their backs?

Kahmod?

Ask your bil.

I think you mean menkinoon. My transliteration may be wrong but gf will understand

Maybe you mean rhinoceros beetles. Great little beetles - make a noise when you pick them up. Unfortunately my family like them with a little garlic - i try to discourage that.

Unfortunately my wife seems to like eating a wide variety of the critters. Don't mind buying them off the street, but when she brings the live ones home and starts ripping the wings off prior to cooking...Oh Dear Lord!

If you can post a picture I'm sure someone knowledgeable will be able to tell you for sure.

Beetle type creatures on their backs are usually on their last moments and many of them

do it this way.

Rhinoceros beetles like the name suggests have a distinctive horn looking thing on the front of their heads. They are quite harmless.

Maybe so, but nearly every day?

He does not speak any English, and although I can speak a little Thai, not enough for a conversation.

There is no way I'm going to pick them up, or even worse, eat them.

Unlikely, they live in bamboo.

More likely cockroaches or weevils.

They may be harmless, but I should watch I don't tramp on one, I don't fancy a horn up my foot.

Oh yeah, they fly. The cooking technique (cover your eyes for the squeamish). You tear the wings off, get 'em in water while they crap themselves, then following bowel evacuation promptly fry. Add seasoning, and viola!

It`s only the males that have the horn, the females prefer to lay on their backs.
